Axel. Of course I knew Laura was only a child; but I thought she would grow up when she felt the approach of love. But she has never felt its approach; she is like a bud that will not open, and I cannot warm the atmosphere. But you could do that--you, in whom she has confided all her first longings--you, whose kind heart knows so well how to sacrifice its happiness for others. You know you are to some extent responsible, too, for the fact that the most important event in her life came upon her a little unpreparedly; so you ought to take her by the hand and guide her first steps away from her parents and towards me.

Publisher: Kessinger Publishing
Published Date: 2005-06-01
Categories: Drama
Bjornson received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1903 as a tribute to his noble, magnificent and versatile poetry, which has always been distinguished by both the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its spirit. The Introduction begins: The three plays here presented were the outcome of a period when Bjornson's views on many topics were undergoing a drastic revision and he was abandoning much of his previous orthodoxy in many directions. Two of them were written during, and one immediately after, a three years' absence from Norway-years spent almost entirely in southern Europe. The Three Dramas included in this volume are: The Editor; The Bankrupt; and The King. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

I know-and so do you.

And when (so comfortably placed)
...
