To the cities I came in a time of disorderB
That was ruled by hungerB
I sheltered with the people in a time of uproarC
And then I joined in their rebellionD
That's how I passed my time that was given to me on this EarthE
-
I ate my dinners between the battlesF
I lay down to sleep among the murderersG
I didn't care for much for loveH
And for nature's beauties I had little patienceI
That's how I passed my time that was given to me on this EarthE
-
The city streets all led to foul swamps in my timeJ
My speech betrayed me to the butchersG
I could do only littleK
But without me those that ruled could not sleep so easilyL
That's what I hopedM
That's how I passed my time that was given to me on this EarthE
-
Our forces were slight and smallN
Our goal lay in the far distanceI
Clearly in our sightsO
If for me myself beyond my reachingP
That's how I passed my time that was given to me on this EarthE

-
You who will come to the surfaceQ
From the flood that's overwhelmed us and drowned us allN
Must think when you speak of our weakness in times of darknessQ
That you've not had to faceR
-
Days when we were used to changing countriesS
More often than shoesT
Through the war of the classes despairingP
That there was only injustice and no outrageU
-
Even so we realisedM
Hatred of oppression still distorts the featuresG
Anger at injustice still makes voices raised and uglyL
Oh we who wished to lay for the foundations for peace and friendlinessV
Could never be friendly ourselvesW
-
And in the future when no longerB
Do human beings still treat themselves as animalsF
Look back on us with indulgenceI
