A
-
Indeed I live in the dark agesB
A guileless word is an absurdity A smooth forehead betokensB
A hard heart He who laughsB
Has not yet heardC
The terrible tidingsB
-
Ah what an age it isB
When to speak of trees is almost a crimeD
For it is a kind of silence about injusticeB
And he who walks calmly across the streetE
Is he not out of reach of his friendsB
In troubleF
-
It is true I earn my livingG
But believe me it is only an accidentH
Nothing that I do entitles me to eat my fillI
By chance I was spared If my luck leaves meJ
I am lostK
-
They tell me eat and drink Be glad you have itL
But how can I eat and drinkM
When my food is snatched from the hungryJ
And my glass of water belongs to the thirstyJ
And yet I eat and drinkM
-
I would gladly be wiseB
The old books tell us what wisdom isB
Avoid the strife of the worldN
Live out your little timeD
Fearing no oneO
Using no violenceB
Returning good for evilF
Not fulfillment of desire but forgetfulnessB
Passes for wisdomP
I can do none of thisB
Indeed I live in the dark agesB
-
-
-
I came to the cities in a time of disorderQ
When hunger ruledR
I came among men in a time of uprisingG
And I revolted with themS
So the time passed awayT
Which on earth was given meJ
-
I ate my food between massacresB
The shadow of murder lay upon my sleepU
And when I loved I loved with indifferenceB
I looked upon nature with impatienceB
So the time passed awayT
Which on earth was given meJ
-
In my time streets led to the quicksandV
Speech betrayed me to the slaughtererQ
There was little I could do But without meJ
The rulers would have been more secure This was my hopeW
So the time passed awayT
Which on earth was given meJ
-
-
-
You who shall emerge from the floodX
In which we are sinkingG
ThinkM
When you speak of our weaknessesB
Also of the dark timeD
That brought them forthY
-
For we went changing our country more often than our shoesB
In the class war despairingG
When there was only injustice and no resistanceB
-
For we knew only too wellZ
Even the hatred of squalorQ
Makes the brow grow sternA2
Even anger against injusticeB
Makes the voice grow harsh Alas weJ
Who wished to lay the foundations of kindnessB
Could not ourselves be kindB2
-
But you when at last it comes to passB
That man can help his fellow manC2
Do no judge usB
Too harshlyJ
