From the play 'Mother Courage'A
-
You saw sagacious SolomonB
You know what came of himC
To him complexities seemed plainD
He cursed the hour that gave birth to himC
And saw that everything was vainD
How great and wise was SolomonB
The world however did not waitE
But soon observed what followed onF
It's wisdom that had brought him to this stateE
How fortunate the man with noneB
-
You saw courageous Caesar nextG
You know what he becameH
They deified him in his lifeI
Then had him murdered just the sameH
And as they raised the fatal knifeI
How loud he cried you too my sonB
The world however did not waitE
But soon observed what followed onF
It's courage that had brought him to that stateE
How fortunate the man with noneB
-
You heard of honest SocratesJ
The man who never liedK
They weren't so grateful as you'd thinkL
Instead the rulers fixed to have him triedK
And handed him the poisoned drinkL
How honest was the people's noble sonB
The world however did not waitE
But soon observed what followed onF
It's honesty that brought him to that stateE
How fortunate the man with noneB
-
Here you can see respectable folkM
Keeping to God's own lawsN
So far he hasn't taken heedO
You who sit safe and warm indoorsP
Help to relieve our bitter needO
How virtuously we had begunB
The world however did not waitE
But soon observed what followed onF
It's fear of god that brought us to that stateE
How fortunate the man with noneB
