'Tis a song of the Never Never landA
Set to the tune of a scorching galeB
On the sandhills redC
When the grasses deadC
Loudly rustle and bow the headC
To the breath of its dusty hailB
-
Where the cattle trample a dusty padD
Across the never ending plainE
And come and goF
With muttering lowF
In the time when the rivers cease to flowF
And the Drought King holds his reignE
-
When the fiercest piker who ever turnedG
With lowered head in defiance proudH
Grown gaunt and weakI
Release doth seekI
In vain from the depths of the slimy creekI
His sepulchre and his shroudH
-
His requiem sung by an insect hostJ
Born of the pestilential airK
That seethe and swarmL
In hideous formL
Where the stagnant waters lie thick and warmL
And Fever lurks in his lairK
-
Where a placid thirst provoking lakeM
Clear in the flashing sunlight liesN
But the stockman knowsO
No water flowsO
Where the shifting mirage comes and goesO
Like a spectral paradiseP
-
And crouched in the saltbush' sickly shadeQ
Murmurs to Heaven a piteous prayerK
O God must IR
Prepare to die '-
And gazing up at the brazen skyR
Reads his death warrant thereK
-
Gaunt slinking dingoes snap and snarlS
Watching his slowly ebbing breathT
Crows are flyingU
Hoarsely cryingU
Burial service o'er the dyingU
Foul harbingers of DeathT
-
Full many a man has perished thereK
Whose bones gleam white from the waste of sandA
Who left no nameV
On the scroll of FameV
Yet died in his tracks as well becameV
A son of that desert landA
