Will she spring with a blush from the arms of DawnA
When the sleepy songsters pruneB
Their dewy vestments on bush and thornC
And the jovial magpie winds his hornC
In sweet r veil to the lazy mornC
And the sun comes all too soonB
Will she come with him from the farthest rimD
Of the blue Pacific seaE
But how shall I know my lady and byF
What token will she know meE
-
Will she come to me in the noonday hushG
When the flowers are fast asleepH
'Neath their counterpane of emerald plushG
In the fragrant warmth of the under brushG
Where Spring still lingers on moist and lushG
While naught but the shadows creepH
And all is rest but the eager questI
And the buzz of the tireless beeE
But how shall I know my lady thenJ
And how will my love know meE
-
Or will she come when the gallant DayK
At the hands of the Night lies deadL
When stealthy creatures have right of wayK
Among the branches to romp and playK
And the great green forest turns ashen grayK
At the sound of the dead men's treadL
Will my lady slip with smile on lipM
From the heart of a white box treeE
But how shall I know 'tis she who comesN
And how will she know 'tis meE
-
Will her hair be tinged as when sunbeams girdO
A castle of carmine rockP
Or brown as a leaf in the sun's kiss curledQ
Or dark as the wing of that sable birdO
Whose hated voice is so often heardO
In the wake of the bleating flockP
Or will it be rolled in a crown of goldR
An emblem of royaltyE
But how will I know 'tis she who comesN
And how will she know 'tis meE
-
Is her ear as shapely as Venus' shellS
And pierced by a diamond gleamT
Is her hand as white as the immortelleS
Her voice as sweet as that sounding bellS
The gray bird tolls to the listening dellS
Where the ti tree hides the streamT
Have the words been said is my lady wedL
Is my lady bond or freeE
No matter who claims her earthly formU
For her heart belongs to meE
-
Will her eyes be clear as the amber flightV
Of the stream over sandstone barW
Or darkly blue as the vault of nightV
Will her flesh show pink through its veil of whiteV
And its violet pencilled curves be brightV
As the polished breast of a starW
And where oh where may you find a pairX
Who shall love so well as weE
But how shall I know my lady byF
What token will she know meE
-
Will her cloak be shaped from the southern skiesY
And girt by a starry sashZ
Like an azure mist as my lady hiesY
With the light of love in her kindling eyesY
Will she move with the solemn grace that liesY
In the towering mountain ashZ
Will she come at all may it not befallS
That our fates are dark and dreeX
That I may never know her at allS
And she may never know meE
