When the sleepy songsters prune | B |
Their dewy vestments on bush and thorn | C |
And the jovial magpie winds his horn | C |
In sweet r veil to the lazy morn | C |
And the sun comes all too soon | B |
Will she come with him from the farthest rim | D |
Of the blue Pacific sea | E |
But how shall I know my lady and by | F |
What token will she know me | E |
- | |
Will she come to me in the noonday hush | G |
When the flowers are fast asleep | H |
'Neath their counterpane of emerald plush | G |
In the fragrant warmth of the under brush | G |
Where Spring still lingers on moist and lush | G |
While naught but the shadows creep | H |
And all is rest but the eager quest | I |
And the buzz of the tireless bee | E |
But how shall I know my lady then | J |
And how will my love know me | E |
- | |
Or will she come when the gallant Day | K |
At the hands of the Night lies dead | L |
When stealthy creatures have right of way | K |
Among the branches to romp and play | K |
And the great green forest turns ashen gray | K |
At the sound of the dead men's tread | L |
Will my lady slip with smile on lip | M |
From the heart of a white box tree | E |
But how shall I know 'tis she who comes | N |
And how will she know 'tis me | E |
- | |
Will her hair be tinged as when sunbeams gird | O |
A castle of carmine rock | P |
Or brown as a leaf in the sun's kiss curled | Q |
Or dark as the wing of that sable bird | O |
Whose hated voice is so often heard | O |
In the wake of the bleating flock | P |
Or will it be rolled in a crown of gold | R |
An emblem of royalty | E |
But how will I know 'tis she who comes | N |
And how will she know 'tis me | E |
- | |
Is her ear as shapely as Venus' shell | S |
And pierced by a diamond gleam | T |
Is her hand as white as the immortelle | S |
Her voice as sweet as that sounding bell | S |
The gray bird tolls to the listening dell | S |
Where the ti tree hides the stream | T |
Have the words been said is my lady wed | L |
Is my lady bond or free | E |
No matter who claims her earthly form | U |
For her heart belongs to me | E |
- | |
Will her eyes be clear as the amber flight | V |
Of the stream over sandstone bar | W |
Or darkly blue as the vault of night | V |
Will her flesh show pink through its veil of white | V |
And its violet pencilled curves be bright | V |
As the polished breast of a star | W |
And where oh where may you find a pair | X |
Who shall love so well as we | E |
But how shall I know my lady by | F |
What token will she know me | E |
- | |
Will her cloak be shaped from the southern skies | Y |
And girt by a starry sash | Z |
Like an azure mist as my lady hies | Y |
With the light of love in her kindling eyes | Y |
Will she move with the solemn grace that lies | Y |
In the towering mountain ash | Z |
Will she come at all may it not befall | S |
That our fates are dark and dree | X |
That I may never know her at all | S |
And she may never know me | E |
