A Legend of KiandraA
-
-
The snow lies deep on hill and daleB
In rocky gulch and grassy valeB
The tiny trickling tumbling fallsC
Are frozen 'twixt their rocky wallsC
That grey and brown look silent downD
Upon Kiandra's shrouded townD
-
The Eucumbene itself lies deadE
Fast frozen in its narrow bedE
And distant sounds ring out quite nearA
The crystal air is froze so clearA
While to and fro the people goF
In silent swiftness o'er the snowF
-
And like a mighty gallows frameG
The derrick in the New Chum claimG
Hangs over where despite the coldH
Strong miners seek the hidden goldH
And stiff and blue half frozen throughA
The fickle dame of Fortune wooA
-
Far out along a snow capped rangeI
There rose a sound which echoed strangeI
Where snow emburthen'd branches hangJ
And flashing icicles there rangJ
A gay refrain as towards the plainK
Sped swiftly downward Carl the DaneK
-
His long lithe snow shoes sped alongL
In easy rhythm to his songL
Now slowly circling round the hillM
Now speeding downward with a willM
The crystals crash and blaze and flashN
As o'er the frozen crust they dashN
-
Among the hills the first he shoneO
Of all who buckled snow shoe onP
For though the mountain lads were fleetQ
But one bold rival dare competeQ
To veer and steer devoid of fearA
Beside this strong limbed mountaineerA
-
'Twas Davy Eccleston who daredR
To cast the challenge If Carl caredR
On shoes to try their mutual paceS
Then let him enter for the raceS
Which might be run by anyoneT
A would be champion Carl said DoneT
-
But not alone in point of speedU
They sought to gain an equal meedU
For in the narrow lists of loveV
Dave Eccleston had cast the gloveV
Though both had prayed the blushing maidU
As yet no preference betrayedU
-
But played them off as women willM
One 'gainst the other one untilM
A day when she was sorely pressedU
To loving neither youth confessedU
But did exclaim the wily dameG
Who wins this race I'll bear his nameG
-
These words were running through Carl's headU
As o'er the frozen crust he spedU
But suddenly became awareA
That not alone he travelled thereA
He sudden spied with swinging strideU
A stranger speeding by his sideU
-
The breezes o'er each shoulder toss'dU
His beard bediamonded with frostU
His eyes flashed strangely bushy browedU
His breath hung round him like a shroudU
He never spoke nor silence brokeW
But by the Dane sped stroke for strokeW
-
Old man I neither know your nameG
Nor what you are nor whence you cameG
But this if I but had your shoesX
This championship I ne'er could loseX
To call them mine those shoes divineY
I'll gladly pay should you inclineY
-
The stranger merely bowed his headU
The shoes are yours he gruffly saidU
I change with you though at a lossZ
And in return I ask that crossZ
Which while she sung your mother hungA2
Around your neck when you were youngA2
-
Carl hesitated when he heardU
The price but not for long demurredU
And gave the cross the shoes were lacedU
Upon his feet in trembling hasteU
So long and light smooth polished brightU
His heart beat gladly at the sightU
-
Now on the morning of the raceS
Expectancy on every faceS
They come the programme to fulfilM
Upon the slope of Township HillM
With silent feet the people meetU
While youths and maidens laughing greetU
-
High piled the flashing snowdrifts lieM
And laugh to scorn the sun's dull eyeM
That glistening feebly seems to sayB2
When Summer comes you'll melt awayB2
You'll change your song when I grow strongL
I think so though I may be wrongL
-
The pistol flashed and off they wentU
Like lightning on the steep descentU
Resistlessly down swooping swiftU
O'er the smooth face of polished driftU
The racers strain with might and mainK
But in the lead flies Carl the DaneK
-
Behind him Davy did his bestU
With hopeless eye and lip compressedU
Beat by a snow shoe length at mostU
They flash and pass the winning postU
The maiden said I'll gladly wedU
The youth who in this race has ledU
-
But where was he still speeding fastU
Over the frozen stream he pass'dU
They watched his flying form untilM
They lost it over Sawyer's HillM
Nor saw it more the people sworeA
The like they'd never seen beforeA
-
The way he scaled that steep ascentU
Was quite against all precedentU
While others said he could but chooseX
To do it on those demon shoesX
They talked in vain for Carl the DaneK
Was never seen in flesh againC2
-
But now the lonely diggers sayB2
That sometimes at the close of dayB2
They see a misty wraith flash byM
With the faint echo of a cryM
It may be true perhaps they doU
I doubt it much but what say youU
