Adown the grass grown paths we strayedA
The evening cowslips ope'dA
Their yellow eyes to look at herB
The love sick lilies mopedA
With envy that she rather choseC
To take a creamy petalled roseC
And lean it 'gainst her ebon hairD
All in that garden fairD
-
A languid breeze with stolen scentA
Of box bloom in his graspE
Sighed out his longing in her earF
And with his dying gaspE
Scattered the perfume at her feetA
To blend with others not less sweetA
He loved her but she did not careD
All in that garden fairD
-
The rose she honoured nodded downG
His comrades burst with spiteA
Poor fool he knew not he was doomedA
To barely last the nightA
Are hearts to her but as that flowerB
The plaything of a careless hourB
To lacerate and never spareD
All in that garden fairD
-
I held her hand that I might traceH
Her fortune in its palmI
A bolder moonbeam than the restA
Crept up and kissed her armJ
And kissing once was loth to leaveK
So hid himself within the sleeveK
That clasped the lithe arm white and bareD
All in that garden fairD
-
I traced her fortune love and wealthL
Tho' life alas was shortA
But will that wealth be bought with loveM
Or love with wealth be boughtA
I know not knowing only thisN
Her hand seemed waiting for a kissN
I longed to but I did not dareD
All in that garden fairD
-
But she alas is not for meO
And I am not for herB
Yet ever deep within my thoughtsP
A faint regret must stirB
A thrill of longing that amongQ
Those moonlit paths with lover's tongueQ
I might return and woo her thereD
All in that garden fairD
