The Flying Gang Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDEDFBGBHIJIKLML NBIB OPOPQAIARBSB

I served my time in the days gone byA
In the railway's clash and clangB
And I worked my way to the end and IA
Was the head of the Flying GangB
'Twas a chosen band that was kept at handC
In case of an urgent needD
Was it south or north we were started forthE
And away at our utmost speedD
If word reached town that a bridge was downF
The imperious summons rangB
Come out with the pilot engine sharpG
And away with the flying gangB
Then a piercing scream and a rush of steamH
As the engine moved aheadI
With measured beat by the slum and streetJ
Of the busy town we fledI
By the uplands bright and the homesteads whiteK
With the rush of the western galeL
And the pilot swayed with the pace we madeM
As she rocked on the ringing railL
And the country children clapped their handsN
As the engine's echoes rangB
But their elders said There is work aheadI
When they send for the flying gangB
-
Then across the miles of the saltbush plainO
That gleamed with the morning dewP
Where the grasses waved like the ripening grainO
The pilot engine flewP
A fiery rush in the open bushQ
Where the grade marks seemed to flyA
And the order sped on the wires aheadI
The pilot must go byA
The Governor's special must stand asideR
And the fast express go hangB
Let your orders be that the line is freeS
For the boys in the flying gangB
