Hymnus Post CibumB
-
-
Pastis visceribus ciboque sumptoC
quem lex corporis inbecilla poscitC
laudem lingua Deo patri rependatC
Patri qui Cherubin sedile sacrumB
nec non et Seraphin suum supremoB
subnixus solio tenet regitqueD
-
Hic est quem Sabaoth Deum vocamusE
expers principii carensque fineF
rerum conditor et repertor orbisE
fons vitae liquida fluens ab arceE
infusor fidei sator pudorisE
mortis perdomitor salutis auctorG
-
Omnes quod sumus aut vigemus inde estC
regnat Spiritus ille sempiternusE
a Christo simul et Parente missusE
Intrat pectora candidus pudicaD
quae templi vice consecrata ridentC
postquam conbiberint Deum medullisE
-
Sed si quid vitii dolive nasciE
inter viscera iam dicata sensitC
ceu spurcum refugit celer sacellumB
Taetrum flagrat enim vapore crassoE
horror conscius aestuante culpaH
offensumque bonum niger repellitC
-
Nec solus pudor innocensve votumB
templum constituunt perenne ChristoC
in cordis medii sum ac recessuE
sed ne crapula ferveat cavendum estC
quae sedem fidei cibis refertamB
usque ad congeriem coartet intusE
-
Parcis victibus expedita cordaC
infusum melius Deum receptantC
Hic pastus animae est saporque verusE
sed nos tu gemino fovens paratuC
artus atque animas utroque pastuC
confirmas Pater ac vigore conplesE
-
Sic olim tua praecluens potestasE
inter raucisonos situm leonesE
inlapsis dapibus virum refovitC
Illum fusile numen execrantemB
et curvare caput sub expolitaC
aeris materia nefas putantemB
-
Plebs dirae Babylonis ac tyrannusE
morti subdiderant feris dicarantC
saevis protinus haustibus vorandumB
O semper pietas fidesque tutaC
lambunt indomiti virum leonesE
intactumque Dei tremunt alumnumB
-
Adstant cominus et iubas reponuntC
mansuescit rabies fameque blandaC
praedam rictibus ambit incruentisE
Sed cum tenderet ad superna palmasE
expertumque sibi Deum rogaretC
clausus iugiter indigensque victuC
-
Iussus nuntius advolare terrisE
qui pastum famulo daret probatoC
raptim desilit obsequente mundoC
Cernit forte procul dapes inemptasE
quas messoribus Abbacuc prophetaC
agresti bonus exhibebat arteC
-
Huius caesarie manu prehensaE
plenis sicut erat gravem canistrisE
suspensum rapit et vehit per aurasE
Tum raptus simul ipse prandiumqueD
sensim labitur in lacum leonumB
et quas tunc epulas gerebat offertC
-
Sumas laetus ait libensque carpasE
quae summus Pater angelusque ChristiC
mittunt liba tibi sub hoc pericloA
His sumptis Danielus excitavitC
in caelum faciem ciboque fortisE
Amen reddidit Halleluia dixitC
-
Sic nos muneribus tuis refectiC
largitor Deus omnium bonorumB
grates reddimus et sacramus hymnosE
Tu nos tristifico velut tyrannoF
mundi scilicet inpotentis actuC
conclusos regis et feram repellisE
-
Quae circumfremit ac vorare temptatC
insanos acuens furore dentesE
cur te summe Deus precemur unumB
Vexamur premimur malis rotamurG
oderunt lacerant trahunt lacessuntC
iuncta est suppliciis fides iniquisE
-
Nec defit tamen anxiis medelaA
nam languente trucis leonis iraG
inlapsae superingeruntur escaeD
Quas si quis sitienter hauriendoC
non gustu tenui sed ore plenoF
internis velit inplicare venisE
-
Hic sancto satiatus ex prophetaC
iustorum capiet cibos virorumB
qui fructum domino metunt perenniF
Nil est dulcius ac magis saporumB
nil quod plus hominem iuvare possitC
quam vatis pia praecinentis orsaE
-
His sumptis licet insolens potestasE
pravum iudicet inrogetque mortemB
inpasti licet inruant leonesE
nos semper Dominum patrem fatentesE
in te Christe Deus loquemur unumB
constanterque tuam crucem feremusE

Hymn After MeatC
-
Refreshed we rise and for this bread that feedsE
By law of man's weak flesh our daily needsE
Let every tongue the Father's praises singD
The Father Who on His exalted throneF
O'er Cherubim and Seraphim aloneF
Reigns in His majesty Eternal KingD
-
God of Sabaoth is His name 'tis HeC
Who ne'er began and ne'er shall cease to beC
Builder of worlds created at His wordC
Fountain of Life that flows from out the skyD
He breathes within us Faith and PurityC
Great Conqueror of Death Salvation's LordC
-
From Him each creature life and vigour gainsE
And over all the Eternal Spirit reignsE
Who cometh from the Father and the SonF
When dovelike on pure hearts the heavenly GuestC
Descends they are by God's own presence blestC
As temples where His holy work is doneF
-
But if the taint of vice or guile ariseE
Within the consecrated shrine He fliesE
With speed from out the sin defil d cellA
For driven forth by guilt's black surging tideC
The offended Godhead may not there abideC
Where conscious sin and noisome foulness dwellA
-
Not chastity nor childlike faith aloneF
Build up for Christ an everlasting throneF
Deep in the inmost heart devoid of shameB
But watchful ever must His servants beC
Lest the dark power of sated gluttonyC
Should bind about the abode of faith its chainF
-
Yet simple saints content with frugal fareG
More surely find the Spirit present thereG
Who is our soul's true strength and heavenly foodC
Thy love for us a twofold feast suppliesE
O Father whence the soul may strengthened riseE
And eke the body gain new hardihoodC
-
Thus fed and sheltered by Thy matchless mightC
The lions' hideous roar could not affrightC
Thy loyal servant in the days of oldC
He boldly cursed the molten deityC
And stood with stubborn head uplifted highD
That scorned to bow before a god of goldC
-
Then Babylon's vile mob with fury glowsE
Death is his doom and straight the tyrant throwsE
The youth to be his savage lions' preyG
But faith and piety Thou still dost saveI
For lo the untamed brutes no longer raveI
But round God's unscathed child they gently playG
-
Close by his side they stand with drooping maneF
The grisly gaping jaws from blood refrainF
And with rough tongues their whilom prey caressE
But when in prayer he raised his hands to heavenF
And called the God from Whom such help was givenF
Close prisoned hungry and in sore distressE
-
A wing d messenger to earth He sendsE
Who swiftly through the parting clouds descendsE
To feed His servant proven by the testC
By chance he sees from far the unbought fareG
Which the good seer Habakkuk's kindly careG
With rustic art had for the reapers dressedC
-
Then grasping in strong hand the prophet's hairG
He bears him gently through the rushing airG
Still burdened with the platter's savoury loadC
Till o'er the lions' den at last they stayedC
And straightway to the starving youth displayedC
The food thus brought by God's good grace bestowedC
-
Take this with joy he said and thankful feedC
The bread that in thy hour of direst needC
By the great Father sent Christ's angel bringsE
Then Daniel lifts his eyes to heaven aboveJ
And strengthened by the wondrous gift of loveJ
Amen he cries and Alleluia singsE
-
Thus therefore by Thy bounties now restoredC
Giver of all things good Almighty LordC
We render thanks and sing glad hymns to TheeC
Though prisoned in an evil world we dwellA
Where sin's grim tyrant rules Thou dost repelA
With sovran power our mortal enemyC
-
He roars around us and would fain devourG
Grinding his angry teeth when 'gainst his powerG
In Thee alone O God we still confideC
By evil things we are beset and vexedC
Tormented hated harassed and perplexedC
Our faith by cruel suffering sorely triedC
-
Yet help ne'er fails us in our time of needC
For Thou canst quell the lions' rage and feedC
Our hungry spirits with celestial fareG
And if some soul no meagre taste would gainF
Of that repast but thirstily is fainF
Full measure of the heavenly sweets to shareG
-
He by the holy seers of old is fedC
And shall partake the loyal reapers' breadC
Who labour in the eternal Master's fieldC
For nothing sweeter than the Word can beC
That fell from righteous lips once touched by TheeC
And nought can richer grace to mortals yieldC
-
With this sustained though vaunting tyrannyC
By unjust judgment doom us straight to dieD
And starv d lions rush these limbs to tearG
Confessing ever Thine Eternal SonF
With Thee Almighty Father ever oneF
His cross with faith unshaken will we bearG
