I heard an old familiar airA
Strummed idly by a careless handB
Yet in the melody were rareA
Sweet echoings from childhood landB
-
The well remembered mother touchC
The wise denials and consentsD
The trivial sorrows that were muchC
Small pleasures that were large eventsD
-
The fancies dreams strange wonderingsD
The daily problems unexplainedE
Momentous as the cares of kingsD
That on unhappy thrones have reignedE
-
Came back with each unstudied toneF
And came that song remembered bestG
Which with a sweetness all its ownF
Once lulled the play worn child to restG
-
And there secure as Tarik's heightH
He slumbered shielded from alarmsD
Safe from the mystery of nightH
Close folded in the mother's armsD
-
Then Israel's mighty songs of oldI
And all the modern masters' artJ
Were less than simple lays that toldI
The secret of the mother's heartJ
-
The sweetest melody that flowsD
From lips that win the world's applauseD
Charms not like that which childhood knowsD
Unfettered by the curb of lawsD
-
For though we rise to nobler themesD
To grander harmonies attainK
Their lives not in the academesD
The magic of the simpler strainK
-
And we may spurn the cruder songL
Or name it anything we willM
Denounce the artifice as wrongL
Yet to the child 'tis music stillM
-
Thus list'ning to an idle airA
Struck lightly by a careless handB
I heard amid the cadence thereA
The sweetest song of childhood landB
