The Criminal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEFE GHGH IJIJ KHKH LHMH NHNH IOIO OIOI IBIC

Crime flourishes throughout the landA
And bids defiance to the lawB
And wicked deeds on every handA
O'erwhelm our souls with aweC
-
I know one hardened criminalD
Whose maidenhood with crime beginsE
Who safe behind a prison wallF
Should expiate her sinsE
-
She is a thief whene'er she smilesG
For then she steals my heart from meH
And keeps it with a maiden's wilesG
And never sets it freeH
-
She plunders sighs from humankindI
She pilfers tears I would not weepJ
She robs me of my peace of mindI
And she purloins my sleepJ
-
Of lawless ways she stands confessedK
And is a burglar bold whene'erH
She finds a weakness in my breastK
And slyly enters thereH
-
A gambler she whose arts entranceL
Whose victims yield without demurH
Content to play Love's game of chanceM
And lose their hearts to herH
-
A graver crime is hers for whenN
Her matchless beauty I admireH
Of arson she is guilty thenN
And sets my heart on fireH
-
A bandit preying on mankindI
Her captives by the score increaseO
No hand can e'er their chains unbindI
No ransom bring releaseO
-
She is a cruel murderessO
Whene'er her eyes send forth a dartI
And as she holds me in duressO
It stabs me to the heartI
-
Crime flourishes throughout the landI
And bids defiance to the lawB
And wicked deeds on every handI
O'erwhelm our souls with aweC
