Sit closer friends around the boardB
Death grants us yet a little timeC
Now let the cheering cup be pouredB
And welcome song and jest and rhymeC
Enjoy the gifts that fortune sendsD
Sit closer friendsD
-
And yet we pause With trembling lipE
We strive the fitting phrase to makeF
Remembering our fellowshipE
Lamenting Destiny's mistakeF
We marvel much when Fate offendsD
And claims our friendsD
-
Companion of our nights of mirthG
Where all were merry who were wiseH
Does Death quite understand your worthG
And know the value of his prizeH
I doubt me if he comprehendsD
He knows no friendsD
-
And in that realm is there no joyI
Of comrades and the jocund senseJ
Can Death so utterly destroyI
For gladness grant no recompenseJ
And can it be that laughter endsD
With absent friendsD
-
Oh scholars whom we wisest callK
Who solve great questions at your easeL
We ask the simplest of them allK
And yet you cannot answer theseL
And is it thus your knowledge endsD
To comfort friendsD
-
Dear Omar should You chance to meetM
Our Brother Somewhere in the GloomN
Pray give to Him a Message sweetM
From Brothers in the Tavern RoomN
He will not ask who 'tis that sendsD
For We were FriendsD
-
Again a parting sail we seeA
Another boat has left the shoreO
A kinder soul on board has sheA
Than ever left the land beforeO
And as her outward course she bendsD
Sit closer friendsD
