We strive the fitting phrase to make | F |
Remembering our fellowship | E |
Lamenting Destiny's mistake | F |
We marvel much when Fate offends | D |
And claims our friends | D |

Companion of our nights of mirth | G |
Where all were merry who were wise | H |
Does Death quite understand your worth | G |
And know the value of his prize | H |
I doubt me if he comprehends | D |
He knows no friends | D |

And in that realm is there no joy | I |
Of comrades and the jocund sense | J |
Can Death so utterly destroy | I |
For gladness grant no recompense | J |
And can it be that laughter ends | D |
With absent friends | D |

Oh scholars whom we wisest call | K |
Who solve great questions at your ease | L |
We ask the simplest of them all | K |
