Poet my master come tell me trueA
And how are your verses madeB
Ah that is the easiest thing to doA
You take a cloud of a silvern hueA
A tender smile or a sprig of rueA
With plenty of light and shadeB
-
And weave them round in syllables rareC
With a grace and skill divineD
With the earnest words of a pleading prayerC
With a cadence caught from a dulcet airC
A tale of love and a lock of hairC
Or a bit of a trailing vineD
-
Or delving deep in a mine unwroughtB
You find in the teeming earthE
The golden vein of a noble thoughtB
The soul of a statesman still unboughtB
Or a patriot's cry with anguish fraughtB
For the land that gave him birthE
-
A brilliant youth who has lost his wayF
On the winding road of lifeG
A sculptor's dream of the plastic clayF
A painter's soul in a sunset rayF
The sweetest thing a woman can sayF
Or a struggling nation's strifeG
-
A boy's ambition a maiden's starH
Unrisen but yet to beI
A glimmering light that shines afarH
For a sinking ship on a moaning barH
An empty sleeve a veteran's scarH
Or a land where men are freeI
-
And if the poet's hand be strongJ
To weave the web of a deathless songJ
And if a master guide the penK
To words that reach the hearts of menK
And if the ear and the touch be trueA
It's the easiest thing in the world to doA
