I sit before the firelight's glowA
With all the world in apogeeB
And con good Master FlorioA
With pipe a light and as I seeB
Queen Bess herself with book a kneeB
Reading it o'er and o'er againC
Here 'neath my cosy mantel treeB
I smoke my pipe and read MontaigneC
-
Now howls the wind and drives the snowC
The traveler shivers on the leaB
While with my precious folioB
Behold a happy devoteeB
To book and warmth and reverieB
The blast upon the window paneC
Disturbs me not as trouble freeB
I smoke my pipe and read MontaigneC
-
I am content and thus I knowC
A mind as calm as summer seaB
A heart that stranger is to woeC
To happiness I hold the keyB
In this rare sweet philosophyB
And while the Fates so fair ordainC
Well pleased with Destiny's decreeB
I smoke my pipe and read MontaigneC
-
-
ENVOYD
-
Dear Prince aye more than prince to meB
Thou monarch of immortal reignC
Always thy subject I would beB
And smoke my pipe and read MontaigneC
