A
God's own best will bide the testB
And God's own worst will fallC
But best or worst or last or firstD
He ordereth it allC
-
-
For all is good if understoodE
Ah could we understandF
And right and ill are tools of skillG
Held in His either handF
-
-
The harlot and the anchoriteF
The martyr and the rakeH
Deftly He fashions each arightF
Its vital part to takeH
-
-
Wisdom He makes to form the fruitF
Where the high blossoms beI
And Lust to kill the weaker shootF
And Drink to trim the treeI
-
-
And Holiness that so the boleJ
Be solid at the coreK
And Plague and Fever that the wholeJ
Be changing evermoreK
-
-
He strews the microbes in the lungL
The blood clot in the brainM
With test and test He picks the bestF
Then tests them once againN
-
-
He tests the body and the mindF
He rings them o'er and o'erO
And if they crack He throws them backP
And fashions them once moreK
-
-
He chokes the infant throat with slimeQ
He sets the ferment freeI
He builds the tiny tube of limeQ
That blocks the arteryI
-
-
He lets the youthful dreamer storeK
Great projects in his brainM
Until He drops the fungus sporeK
That smears them out againN
-
-
He stores the milk that feeds the babeR
He dulls the tortured nerveS
He gives a hundred joys of senseT
Where few or none might serveS
-
-
And still He trains the branch of goodF
Where the high blossoms beI
And wieldeth still the shears of illG
To prune and prime His treeI
