The grime is on the window paneA
Pale the London sunbeams fallB
And show the smudge of mildew stainA
Which lies on the distempered wallB
-
I am a cripple as you seeC
And here I lie a broken thingD
But God has given flight to meC
That mocks the swiftest eagle wingD
-
For if I will to see or hearE
Quick as the thought my spirit fliesF
And lo the picture flashes clearG
Through all the mist of centuriesH
-
I can recall the Tigris' strandI
Where once the Turk and Tartar metJ
When the great Lord of SamarcandJ
Struck down the Sultan BajazetJ
-
Under a ten league swirl of dustJ
The roaring battle swings and swaysK
Now reeling down now upward thrustJ
The crescent sparkles through the hazeK
-
I see the Janissaries flyL
I see the chain mailed leader fallB
I hear the Tekbar clear and highL
The true believer's battle callB
-
And tossing o'er the press I markM
The horse tail banner over allB
Shaped like the smudge of mildew darkM
That lies on the distempered wallB
-
And thus the meanest thing I seeC
Will set a scene within my brainA
And every sound that comes to meC
Will bring strange echoes back againN
-
Hark now In rhythmic monotoneO
You hear the murmur of the martJ
The low deep unremitting moanO
That comes from weary London's heartJ
-
But I can change it to the humP
Of multitudinous acclaimQ
When triple walled ByzantiumP
Re echoes the Imperial nameQ
-
I hear the beat of armed feetJ
The legions clanking on their wayR
The long shout rims from street to streetJ
With rolling drum and trumpet brayR
-
So I hear it rising fallingD
Till it dies away once moreS
And I hear the costers callingD
Mid the weary London roarS
-
Who shall pity then the lamenessC
Which still holds me from the groundJ
Who commiserate the samenessC
Of the scene that girds me roundJ
-
Though I lie a broken wreckT
Though I seem to want for allB
Still the world is at my beckT
And the ages at my callB
