SOCRATES SPEAKSA
-
Hither come hither ye Clouds renowned and unveil yourselvesB
hereC
Come though ye dwell on the sacred crests of Olympian snowD
Or whether ye dance with the Nereid Choir in the gardens clearE
Or whether your golden urns are dipped in Nile's overflowD
Or whether you dwell by Maeotis mereE
Or the snows of Mimas arise appearE
And hearken to us and accept our gifts ere ye rise and goD
-
-
THE CLOUDS SINGF
-
Immortal Clouds from the echoing shoreG
Of the father of streams from the sounding seaH
Dewy and fleet let us rise and soarG
Dewy and gleaming and fleet are weH
Let us look on the tree clad mountain crestI
On the sacred earth where the fruits rejoiceJ
On the waters that murmur east and westI
On the tumbling sea with his moaning voiceJ
For unwearied glitters the Eye of the AirK
And the bright rays gleamL
Then cast we our shadows of mist and fareK
In our deathless shapes to glance everywhereK
From the height of the heaven on the land and airK
And the Ocean StreamL
Let us on ye Maidens that bring the RainM
Let us gaze on Pallas's citadelN
In the country of Cecrops fair and dearE
The mystic land of the holy cellN
Where the Rites unspoken securely dwellN
And the gifts of the gods that know not stainM
And a people of mortals that know not fearE
For the temples tall and the statues fairK
And the feasts of the gods are holiest thereK
The feasts of Immortals the chaplets of flowersO
And the Bromian mirth at the coming of springF
And the musical voices that fill the hoursO
And the dancing feet of the maids that singF
