Sonnets Of The Empire: Hawk Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBACDECDE

Great sea dog fighter in the great old wayA
What though thy ships were tinder and the pestB
Rotted thy ruffian crews that need had prestB
And all thy keels were clogged with foul decayA
Yet through the roaring months thy squadron layA
A watch dog eager at the throat of BrestB
While all the ocean smote her from the WestB
And all the tempests tore her in their playA
Thy soul was of the whirlwind and thy cryC
Still leaps from out the crash of guns and wavesD
To hurl us headlong on the foeman s vanE
As in the Bay of Death mid breakers highC
And felon reefs whereo er the Atlantic ravesD
Thy flagship foremost into glory ranE
