Grey Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBA CDEDCE FGHFFHHF DIDJJI

LADY of Sorrow What though laughing blueA
Thy sister mock men s anguish and the sunB
Glare like a wrathful judge on many a oneB
That longs for night his bitter shame to rueA
Yet dost thou grant thy mercy of mist and dewA
And cloud and calm ere angry day be doneB
Weaving over the vault the weary shunB
Thy veil of peace with pity trembling throughA
-
When all light loves and all brave hues are flownC
When beaten hope falls from the reeling fightD
And life is lone upon her desolate wayE
And noon is fierce and no men see arightD
Then weary eyes turn unto thee their ownC
Lady of Grief the soul s madonna GreyE

-
Yet not in sorrow only art thou fairF
For joy may know and love thee in the pallG
Of spray that slumbers on the waterfallH
Or in low cottage smoke in evening airF
Or in brave stone carven in glory rareF
Or when the tender mists of Autumn fallH
Dappling the mead with beauty and the tallH
Stark dreaming oaks thine ancient livery wearF
-
Yet none hath known thy loveliness arightD
Save him who gazing in his lady s eyesI
Sees dim lists tossing with plumes of many a knightD
And woods where elfin waters gleam and glanceJ
And all the vision and faith of old romanceJ
And the great dream of youth that never diesI
