This poem is for my wifeA
I have made it plainly and honestlyB
The mark is on itC
Like the burl on the knifeA
-
I have not made it for praiseD
She has no more need for praiseD
Than summer hasE
Or the bright daysD
-
In all that becomes a womanF
Her words and her ways are beautifulG
Love's lovely dutyB
the well swept roomH
-
Wherever she is there is sunF
And time and a sweet airI
Peace is thereI
Work doneF
-
There are always curtains and flowersJ
And candles and baked breadK
And a cloth spreadK
And a clean houseL
-
Her voice when she sings is a voiceM
At dawn by a freshening springN
Where the wave leaps in the windO
And rejoicesM
-
Wherever she is it is nowP
It is here where the apples areQ
Here in the starsM
In the quick hourR
-
The greatest and richest goodS
My own life to live inT
This she has given meB
-
If giver couldS
