Late at e'en drinking the wineA
And ere they paid the lawingB
They set a combat them betweenC
To fight it in the dawingB
'What though ye be my sister's lordD
We'll cross our swords to morrow 'E
'What though my wife your sister beF
I'll meet ye then on Yarrow 'E
'O stay at hame my ain gude lordD
O stay my ain dear marrowG
My cruel brither will you betrayH
On the dowie banks of Yarrow 'E
-
'O fare ye weel my lady dearI
And put aside your sorrowG
For if I gae I'll sune returnJ
Frae the bonny banks o' Yarrow '-
-
She kiss'd his cheek she kaimed his hairK
As oft she'd done before OG
She belted him with his gude brandL
And he's awa' to YarrowG
-
When he gaed up the Tennies bankB
As he gaed mony a morrowG
Nine armed men lay in a denM
On the dowie braes o' YarrowG
-
'O come ye here to hunt or hawkB
The bonny Forest thoroughG
Or come ye here to wield your brandL
Upon the banks o' Yarrow '-
-
'I come not here to hunt or hawkB
As oft I've dune before OG
But I come here to wield my brandL
Upon the banks o' YarrowG
-
'If ye attack me nine to aneN
That God may send ye sorrowG
Yet will I fight while stand I mayH
On the bonny banks o' Yarrow '-
-
Two has he hurt and three has slainN
On the bloody braes o' YarrowG
But the stubborn knight crept in behindO
And pierced his body thoroughG
-
'Gae hame gae hame you brither JohnP
And tell your sister sorrowG
To come and lift her leafu' lordD
On the dowie banks o' Yarrow '-
-
Her brither John gaed ower the hillQ
As oft he'd dune before OG
There he met his sister dearI
Cam' rinnin' fast to YarrowG
-
'I dreamt a dream last night ' she saysR
'I wish it binna sorrowG
I dreamt I pu'd the heather greenC
Wi' my true love on Yarrow '-
-
'I'll read your dream sister ' he saysR
'I'll read it into sorrowG
Ye're bidden go take up your loveS
He's sleeping sound on Yarrow '-
-
She's torn the ribbons frae her headT
That were baith braid and narrowG
She's kilted up her lang claithingB
And she's awa' to YarrowG
-
She's ta'en him in her arms twaU
And gi'en him kisses thoroughG
She sought to bind his many woundsV
But he lay dead on YarrowG
-
'O haud your tongue ' her father saysR
'And let be a' your sorrowG
I'll wed you to a better lordD
Than him you lost on Yarrow '-
-
'O haud your tongue father ' she saysR
'Far warse ye make my sorrowG
A better lord could never beF
Than him that lies on Yarrow '-
-
She kiss'd his lips she kaimed his hairK
As aft she'd dune before OG
And there with grief her heart did breakB
Upon the banks o' YarrowG
