UNDER harness his heart then is hit indeedA
by sharpest shafts and no shelter availsB
from foul behest of the hellish fiendC
Him seems too little what long he possessedD
Greedy and grim no golden ringsB
he gives for his pride the promised futureE
forgets he and spurns with all God has sent himF
Wonder Wielder of wealth and fameG
Yet in the end it ever comesB
that the frame of the body fragile yieldsB
fated falls and there follows anotherE
who joyously the jewels dividesB
the royal riches nor recks of his forebearH
Ban then such baleful thoughts Beowulf dearestI
best of men and the better part chooseB
profit eternal and temper thy prideJ
warrior famous The flower of thy mightK
lasts now a while but erelong it shall beL
that sickness or sword thy strength shall minishM
or fang of fire or flooding billowN
or bite of blade or brandished spearO
or odious age or the eyes' clear beamP
wax dull and darken Death even theeL
in haste shall o'erwhelm thou hero of warQ
So the Ring Danes these half years a hundred I ruledR
wielded 'neath welkin and warded them bravelyL
from mighty ones many o'er middle earthS
from spear and sword till it seemed for meL
no foe could be found under fold of the skyT
Lo sudden the shift To me seated secureU
came grief for joy when Grendel beganV
to harry my home the hellish foeN
for those ruthless raids unresting I sufferedW
heart sorrow heavy Heaven be thankedX
Lord Eternal for life extendedY
that I on this head all hewn and bloodyL
after long evil with eyes may gazeB
Go to the bench now Be glad at banquetZ
warrior worthy A wealth of treasureE
at dawn of day be dealt between usB
Glad was the Geats' lord going betimesB
to seek his seat as the Sage commandedY
Afresh as before for the famed in battleA2
for the band of the hall was a banquet dightY
nobly anew The Night Helm darkenedY
dusk o'er the drinkersB
The doughty ones roseB
for the hoary headed would hasten to restY
aged Scylding and eager the GeatY
shield fighter sturdy for sleeping yearnedY
Him wander weary warrior guestY
from far a hall thane heralded forthB2
who by custom courtly cared for allC2
needs of a thane as in those old daysB
warrior wanderers wont to haveD2
So slumbered the stout heart Stately the hallC2
rose gabled and gilt where the guest slept onE2
till a raven black the rapture of heavenF2
blithe heart boded Bright came flyingG2
shine after shadow The swordsmen hastenedY
athelings all were eager homewardY
forth to fare and far from thenceB
the great hearted guest would guide his keelH2
Bade then the hardy one Hrunting be broughtY
to the son of Ecglaf the sword bade him takeI2
excellent iron and uttered his thanks for itY
quoth that he counted it keen in battleA2
war friend winsome with words he slandered notY
edge of the blade 'twas a big hearted manV
Now eager for parting and armed at pointY
warriors waited while went to his hostY
that Darling of Danes The doughty athelingI2
to high seat hastened and Hrothgar greetedY
