HROTHGAR spake helmet of ScyldingsA
Ask not of pleasure Pain is renewedB
to Danish folk Dead is AeschereC
of Yrmenlaf the elder brotherC
my sage adviser and stay in councilD
shoulder comrade in stress of fightE
when warriors clashed and we warded our headsA
hewed the helm boars hero famedF
should be every earl as Aeschere wasA
But here in Heorot a hand hath slain himG
of wandering death sprite I wot not whitherC
proud of the prey her path she tookH
fain of her fill The feud she avengedI
that yesternight unyieldinglyD
Grendel in grimmest grasp thou killedstI
seeing how long these liegemen mineJ
he ruined and ravaged Reft of lifeK
in arms he fell Now another comesA
keen and cruel her kin to avengeL
faring far in feud of bloodI
so that many a thane shall think who e'erC
sorrows in soul for that sharer of ringsA
this is hardest of heart bales The hand lies lowD
that once was willing each wish to pleaseA
Land dwellers here and liegemen mineJ
who house by those parts I have heard relateI
that such a pair they have sometimes seenM
march stalkers mighty the moorland hauntingN
wandering spirits one of them seemedI
so far as my folk could fairly judgeO
of womankind and one accursedI
in man's guise trod the misery trackP
of exile though huger than human bulkQ
Grendel in days long gone they named himG
folk of the land his father they knew notI
nor any brood that was born to himG
of treacherous spirits Untrod is their homeR
by wolf cliffs haunt they and windy headlandsA
fenways fearful where flows the streamS
from mountains gliding to gloom of the rocksA
underground flood Not far is it henceA
in measure of miles that the mere expandsA
and o'er it the frost bound forest hangingN
sturdily rooted shadows the waveT
By night is a wonder weird to seeA
fire on the waters So wise lived noneU
of the sons of men to search those depthsA
Nay though the heath rover harried by dogsA
the horn proud hart this holt should seekV
long distance driven his dear life firstI
on the brink he yields ere he brave the plungeW
to hide his head 'tis no happy placeA
Thence the welter of waters washes upX
wan to welkin when winds bestirC
evil storms and air grows duskY
and the heavens weep Now is help once moreC
with thee alone The land thou knowst notI
place of fear where thou findest outI
that sin flecked being Seek if thou dareC
I will reward thee for waging this fightI
with ancient treasure as erst I didI
with winding gold if thou winnest backP
