THEN sank they to sleep With sorrow one boughtA
his rest of the evening as ofttime had happenedB
when Grendel guarded that golden hallC
evil wrought till his end drew nighD
slaughter for sins 'Twas seen and toldE
how an avenger survived the fiendF
as was learned afar The livelong timeG
after that grim fight Grendel's motherH
monster of women mourned her woeI
She was doomed to dwell in the dreary watersJ
cold sea courses since Cain cut downK
with edge of the sword his only brotherH
his father's offspring outlawed he fledL
marked with murder from men's delightsM
warded the wilds There woke from himN
such fate sent ghosts as Grendel whoO
war wolf horrid at Heorot foundP
a warrior watching and waiting the frayQ
with whom the grisly one grappled amainK
But the man remembered his mighty powerH
the glorious gift that God had sent himN
in his Maker's mercy put his trustR
for comfort and help so he conquered the foeI
felled the fiend who fled abjectS
reft of joy to the realms of deathT
mankind's foe And his mother nowK
gloomy and grim would go that questU
of sorrow the death of her son to avengeV
To Heorot came she where helmeted DanesW
slept in the hall Too soon came backX
old ills of the earls when in she burstY
the mother of Grendel Less grim though that terrorH
e'en as terror of woman in war is lessZ
might of maid than of men in armsA2
when hammer forged the falchion hardB2
sword gore stained through swine of the helmC2
crested with keen blade carves amainK
Then was in hall the hard edge drawnK
the swords on the settles and shields a manyK
firm held in hand nor helmet mindedD2
nor harness of mail whom that horror seizedE2
Haste was hers she would hie afarF2
and save her life when the liegemen saw herH
Yet a single atheling up she seizedE2
fast and firm as she fled to the moorG2
He was for Hrothgar of heroes the dearestR
of trusty vassals betwixt the seasH2
whom she killed on his couch a clansman famousI2
in battle brave Nor was Beowulf thereJ2
another house had been held apartK2
after giving of gold for the Geat renownedP
Uproar filled Heorot the hand all had viewedL2
blood flecked she bore with her bale was returnedM2
dole in the dwellings 'twas dire exchangeN2
where Dane and Geat were doomed to giveO2
the lives of loved ones Long tried kingP2
the hoary hero at heart was sadQ2
when he knew his noble no more livedR2
and dead indeed was his dearest thaneK
To his bower was Beowulf brought in hasteS2
dauntless victor As daylight brokeT2
along with his earls the atheling lordU2
with his clansmen came where the king abodeV2
waiting to see if the Wielder of AllC
would turn this tale of trouble and woeI
Strode o'er floor the famed in strifeW2
with his hand companions the hall resoundedV2
wishing to greet the wise old kingP2
Ingwines' lord he asked if the nightV2
had passed in peace to the prince's mindV2
