ME thus often the evil monstersA
thronging threatened With thrust of my swordB
the darling I dealt them due returnC
Nowise had they bliss from their booty thenD
to devour their victim vengeful creaturesA
seated to banquet at bottom of seaE
but at break of day by my brand sore hurtF
on the edge of ocean up they layG
put to sleep by the sword And since by themH
on the fathomless sea ways sailor folkI
are never molested Light from eastJ
came bright God's beacon the billows sankK
so that I saw the sea cliffs highL
windy walls For Wyrd oft savethM
earl undoomed if he doughty beE
And so it came that I killed with my swordB
nine of the nicors Of night fought battlesN
ne'er heard I a harder 'neath heaven's domeO
nor adrift on the deep a more desolate manP
Yet I came unharmed from that hostile clutchQ
though spent with swimming The sea upbore meE
flood of the tide on Finnish landR
the welling waters No wise of theeE
have I heard men tell such terror of falchionsN
bitter battle Breca ne'er yetS
not one of you pair in the play of warT
such daring deed has done at allU
with bloody brand I boast not of itV
though thou wast the bane of thy brethren dearW
thy closest kin whence curse of hellX
awaits thee well as thy wit may serveY
For I say in sooth thou son of EcglafY
never had Grendel these grim deeds wroughtZ
monster dire on thy master dearW
in Heorot such havoc if heart of thineA2
were as battle bold as thy boast is loudB2
But he has found no feud will happenC2
from sword clash dread of your Danish clanP
he vaunts him safe from the Victor ScyldingsN
He forces pledges favors noneC2
of the land of Danes but lustily murdersN
fights and feasts nor feud he dreadsN
from Spear Dane men But speedily nowD2
shall I prove him the prowess and pride of the GeatsN
shall bid him battle Blithe to meadE2
go he that listeth when light of dawnF2
this morrow morning o'er men of earthM
ether robed sun from the south shall beamG2
Joyous then was the Jewel giverH2
hoar haired war brave help awaitedI2
the Bright Danes' prince from Beowulf hearingJ2
folk's good shepherd such firm resolveY
Then was laughter of liegemen loud resoundingJ2
with winsome words Came Wealhtheow forthM
queen of Hrothgar heedful of courtesyN
gold decked greeting the guests in hallU
and the high born lady handed the cupK2
first to the East Danes' heir and wardenC2
bade him be blithe at the beer carouseN
the land's beloved one Lustily took heN
banquet and beaker battle famed kingJ2
-
Through the hall then went the Helmings' LadyN
to younger and older everywhereL2
carried the cup till come the momentM2
when the ring graced queen the royal heartedI2
to Beowulf bore the beaker of meadE2
She greeted the Geats' lord God she thankedN2
in wisdom's words that her will was grantedI2
that at last on a hero her hope could leanO2
for comfort in terrors The cup he tookP2
hardy in war from Wealhtheow's handR
and answer uttered the eager for combatQ2
Beowulf spake bairn of EcgtheowM
This was my thought when my thanes and IL
bent to the ocean and entered our boatR2
that I would work the will of your peopleS2
fully or fighting fall in deathM
in fiend's gripe fast I am firm to doT2
an earl's brave deed or end the daysN
of this life of mine in the mead hall hereU2
Well these words to the woman seemedV2
Beowulf's battle boast Bright with goldW2
the stately dame by her spouse sat downX2
Again as erst began in hallU
warriors' wassail and words of powerH2
the proud band's revel till presentlyN
the son of Healfdene hastened to seekY2
rest for the night he knew there waitedI2
fight for the fiend in that festal hallU
when the sheen of the sun they saw no moreT
and dusk of night sank darkling nighL
and shadowy shapes came striding onZ2
wan under welkin The warriors roseN
Man to man he made harangueA3
Hrothgar to Beowulf bade him hailB3
let him wield the wine hall a word he addedI2
Never to any man erst I trustedC3
since I could heave up hand and shieldD3
this noble Dane Hall till now to theeN
Have now and hold this house unpeeredD3
remember thy glory thy might declareL2
watch for the foe No wish shall fail theeN
if thou bidest the battle with bold won lifeY
