To him the stateliest spake in answerA
the warriors' leader his word hoard unlockedB
We are by kin of the clan of GeatsC
and Hygelac's own hearth fellows weD
To folk afar was my father knownE
noble atheling Ecgtheow namedF
Full of winters he fared awayG
aged from earth he is honored stillH
through width of the world by wise men allI
To thy lord and liege in loyal moodJ
we hasten hither to Healfdene's sonK
people protector be pleased to advise usC
To that mighty one come we on mickle errandL
to the lord of the Danes nor deem I rightM
that aught be hidden We hear thou knowestM
if sooth it is the saying of menN
that amid the Scyldings a scathing monsterA
dark ill doer in dusky nightsC
shows terrific his rage unmatchedM
hatred and murder To Hrothgar IO
in greatness of soul would succor bringP
so the Wise and Brave may worst his foesC
if ever the end of ills is fatedM
of cruel contest if cure shall followQ
and the boiling care waves cooler growQ
else ever afterward anguish daysC
he shall suffer in sorrow while stands in placeC
high on its hill that house unpeeredM
Astride his steed the strand ward answeredM
clansman unquailing The keen souled thaneR
must be skilled to sever and sunder dulyD
words and works if he well intendsC
I gather this band is graciously bentM
to the Scyldings' master March then bearingP
weapons and weeds the way I show youS
I will bid my men your boat meanwhileT
to guard for fear lest foemen comeU
your new tarred ship by shore of oceanK
faithfully watching till once againN
it waft o'er the waters those well loved thanesC
winding neck'd wood to Weders' boundsC
heroes such as the hest of fateM
shall succor and save from the shock of warV
They bent them to march the boat lay stillH
fettered by cable and fast at anchorA
broad bosomed ship Then shone the boarsC
over the cheek guard chased with goldM
keen and gleaming guard it keptM
o'er the man of war as marched alongW
heroes in haste till the hall they sawC
broad of gable and bright with goldM
that was the fairest 'mid folk of earthX
of houses 'neath heaven where Hrothgar livedM
and the gleam of it lightened o'er lands afarY
The sturdy shieldsman showed that brightM
burg of the boldest bade them goQ
straightway thither his steed then turnedM
hardy hero and hailed them thusC
Tis time that I fare from you Father AlmightyD
in grace and mercy guard you wellZ
safe in your seekings Seaward I goQ
'gainst hostile warriors hold my watchA2
