THUS seethed unceasing the son of HealfdeneA
with the woe of these days not wisest menA
assuaged his sorrow too sore the anguishB
loathly and long that lay on his folkC
most baneful of burdens and bales of the nightD
-
This heard in his home Hygelac's thaneA
great among Geats of Grendel's doingsE
He was the mightiest man of valorF
in that same day of this our lifeG
stalwart and stately A stout wave walkerF
he bade make ready Yon battle king said heH
far o'er the swan road he fain would seekI
the noble monarch who needed menA
The prince's journey by prudent folkC
was little blamed though they loved him dearJ
they whetted the hero and hailed good omensK
And now the bold one from bands of GeatsK
comrades chose the keenest of warriorsK
e'er he could find with fourteen menA
the sea wood he sought and sailor provedL
led them on to the land's confinesK
Time had now flown afloat was the shipM
boat under bluff On board they climbedN
warriors ready waves were churningO
sea with sand the sailors boreP
on the breast of the bark their bright arrayQ
their mail and weapons the men pushed offR
on its willing way the well braced craftS
Then moved o'er the waters by might of the windT
that bark like a bird with breast of foamU
till in season due on the second dayQ
the curved prow such course had runA
that sailors now could see the landV
sea cliffs shining steep high hillsK
headlands broad Their haven was foundW
their journey ended Up then quicklyH
the Weders' clansmen climbed ashoreP
anchored their sea wood with armor clashingO
and gear of battle God they thankedX
or passing in peace o'er the paths of the seaH
Now saw from the cliff a Scylding clansmanA
a warden that watched the water sideY
how they bore o'er the gangway glittering shieldsK
war gear in readiness wonder seized himZ
to know what manner of men they wereF
Straight to the strand his steed he rodeA2
Hrothgar's henchman with hand of mightD
he shook his spear and spake in parleyH
Who are ye then ye armed menA
mailed folk that yon mighty vesselB2
have urged thus over the ocean waysK
here o'er the waters A warden IC2
sentinel set o'er the sea march hereD2
lest any foe to the folk of DanesK
with harrying fleet should harm the landV
No aliens ever at ease thus bore themE2
linden wielders yet word of leaveF2
clearly ye lack from clansmen hereD2
my folk's agreement A greater ne'er saw IC2
of warriors in world than is one of youG2
yon hero in harness No henchman heH
worthied by weapons if witness his featuresK
his peerless presence I pray you though tellH2
your folk and home lest hence ye fareI2
suspect to wander your way as spiesK
in Danish land Now dwellers afarJ2
ocean travellers take from meH
simple advice the sooner the betterF
I hear of the country whence ye cameK2
