WENT he forth to find at fall of nightA
that haughty house and heed whereverB
the Ring Danes outrevelled to rest had goneC
Found within it the atheling bandD
asleep after feasting and fearless of sorrowE
of human hardship Unhallowed wightA
grim and greedy he grasped betimesF
wrathful reckless from resting placesF
thirty of the thanes and thence he rushedG
fain of his fell spoil faring homewardH
laden with slaughter his lair to seekI
Then at the dawning as day was breakingJ
the might of Grendel to men was knownK
then after wassail was wail upliftedL
loud moan in the morn The mighty chiefM
atheling excellent unblithe satN
labored in woe for the loss of his thanesF
when once had been traced the trail of the fiendO
spirit accurst too cruel that sorrowE
too long too loathsome Not late the respiteP
with night returning anew beganQ
ruthless murder he recked no whitP
firm in his guilt of the feud and crimeR
They were easy to find who elsewhere soughtS
in room remote their rest at nightA
bed in the bowers when that bale was shownK
was seen in sooth with surest tokenT
the hall thane's hate Such held themselvesF
far and fast who the fiend outranQ
Thus ruled unrighteous and raged his fillU
one against all until empty stoodV
that lordly building and long it bode soE
Twelve years' tide the trouble he boreW
sovran of Scyldings sorrows in plentyX
boundless cares There came unhiddenQ
tidings true to the tribes of menQ
in sorrowful songs how ceaselessly GrendelY
harassed Hrothgar what hate he bore himZ
what murder and massacre many a yearA2
feud unfading refused consentB2
to deal with any of Daneland's earlsF
make pact of peace or compound for goldC2
still less did the wise men ween to getD2
great fee for the feud from his fiendish handsF
But the evil one ambushed old and youngE2
death shadow dark and dogged them stillU
lured or lurked in the livelong nightA
of misty moorlands men may say notF2
where the haunts of these Hell Runes beX
Such heaping of horrors the hater of menQ
lonely roamer wrought unceasingJ
harassings heavy O'er Heorot he lordedF2
gold bright hall in gloomy nightsF
and ne'er could the prince approach his throneQ
'twas judgment of God or have joy in his hallG2
Sore was the sorrow to Scyldings' friendF2
heart rending misery Many noblesF
sat assembled and searched out counselY
how it were best for bold hearted menQ
against harassing terror to try their handF2
Whiles they vowed in their heathen fanesF
altar offerings asked with wordsF
that the slayer of souls would succor give themH2
for the pain of their people Their practice thisF
their heathen hope 'twas Hell they thought ofI2
in mood of their mind Almighty they knew notF2
Doomsman of Deeds and dreadful LordF2
nor Heaven's Helmet heeded they everB
Wielder of Wonder Woe for that manQ
who in harm and hatred hales his soulJ2
to fiery embraces nor favor nor changeK2
awaits he ever But well for himZ
that after death day may draw to his LordF2
and friendship find in the Father's armsF
