Now Beowulf bode in the burg of the ScyldingsA
leader beloved and long he ruledB
in fame with all folk since his father had goneC
away from the world till awoke an heirD
haughty Healfdene who held through lifeE
sage and sturdy the Scyldings gladF
Then one after one there woke to himG
to the chieftain of clansmen children fourH
Heorogar then Hrothgar then Halga braveI
and I heard that was 's queenJ
the Heathoscylfing's helpmate dearK
To Hrothgar was given such glory of warH
such honor of combat that all his kinL
obeyed him gladly till great grew his bandM
of youthful comrades It came in his mindN
to bid his henchmen a hall uprearH
ia master mead house mightier farH
than ever was seen by the sons of earthO
and within it then to old and youngP
he would all allot that the Lord had sent himG
save only the land and the lives of his menQ
Wide I heard was the work commandedR
for many a tribe this mid earth roundS
to fashion the folkstead It fell as he orderedT
in rapid achievement that ready it stood thereH
of halls the noblest Heorot he named itU
whose message had might in many a landM
Not reckless of promise the rings he dealtV
treasure at banquet there towered the hallW
high gabled wide the hot surge waitingX
of furious flame Nor far was that dayY
when father and son in law stood in feudZ
for warfare and hatred that woke againQ
With envy and anger an evil spiritA2
endured the dole in his dark abodeB2
that he heard each day the din of revelC2
high in the hall there harps rang outD2
clear song of the singer He sang who knewE2
tales of the early time of manF2
how the Almighty made the earthO
fairest fields enfolded by waterH
set triumphant sun and moonG2
for a light to lighten the land dwellersA
and braided bright the breast of earthO
with limbs and leaves made life for allW
of mortal beings that breathe and moveH2
So lived the clansmen in cheer and revelC2
a winsome life till one beganF2
to fashion evils that field of hellI2
Grendel this monster grim was calledJ2
march riever mighty in moorland livingX
in fen and fastness fief of the giantsA
the hapless wight a while had keptK2
since the Creator his exile doomedL2
On kin of Cain was the killing avengedM2
by sovran God for slaughtered AbelC2
Ill fared his feud and far was he drivenN2
for the slaughter's sake from sight of menQ
Of Cain awoke all that woful breedO2
Etins and elves and evil spiritsA
as well as the giants that warred with GodP2
weary while but their wage was paid themQ2
