Who sekes to tame the blustering windeA
Or causse the floods bend to his wyllB
Or els against dame nature's kindeA
To 'change' things frame by cunning skyllB
That man I thinke bestoweth paineC
Thoughe that his laboure be in vaineC
-
Who strives to breake the sturdye steeleB
Or goeth about to staye the sunneC
Who thinks to causse an oke to reeleB
Which never can by force be doneC
That man likewise bestoweth paineC
Thoughe that his laboure be in vaineC
-
Who thinks to stryve against the streameD
And for to sayle without a masteA
Unlesse he thinks perhapps to faineC
His travell ys forelorne and wasteA
And so in cure of all his paineC
His travell ys his cheffest gaineC
-
So he lykewise that goes aboutA
To please eche eye and every eareE
Had nede to have withouten doubtA
A golden gyft with him to beareE
For evyll report shall be his gaineC
Though he bestowe both toyle and paineC
-
God grant eche man one to amendA
God send us all a happy placeF
And let us pray unto the endA
That we may have our princes graceF
Amen amen so shall we gaineC
A dewe reward for all our paineC
