The Author To Her Book Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIJK LMNOThou ill form'd offspring of my feeble brain | A |
Who after birth did'st by my side remain | A |
Till snatcht from thence by friends less wise than true | B |
Who thee abroad expos'd to public view | B |
Made thee in rags halting to th' press to trudge | C |
Where errors were not lessened all may judge | C |
At thy return my blushing was not small | D |
My rambling brat in print should mother call | D |
I cast thee by as one unfit for light | E |
Thy Visage was so irksome in my sight | E |
Yet being mine own at length affection would | F |
Thy blemishes amend if so I could | F |
I wash'd thy face but more defects I saw | G |
And rubbing off a spot still made a flaw | G |
I stretcht thy joints to make thee even feet | H |
Yet still thou run'st more hobbling than is meet | H |
In better dress to trim thee was my mind | I |
But nought save home spun Cloth i' th' house I find | I |
In this array 'mongst Vulgars mayst thou roam | J |
In Critics' hands beware thou dost not come | K |
And take thy way where yet thou art not known | L |
If for thy Father askt say thou hadst none | M |
And for thy Mother she alas is poor | N |
Which caus'd her thus to send thee out of door | O |
