In silent night when rest I tookA
For sorrow near I did not lookA
I waked was with thund'ring noiseB
And piteous shrieks of dreadful voiceC
That fearful sound of Fire and FireD
Let no man know is my desireD
I starting up the light did spyE
And to my God my heart did cryE
To strengthen me in my distressF
And not to leave me succorlessF
Then coming out beheld a spaceF
The flame consume my dwelling placeF
And when I could no longer lookA
I blest His name that gave and tookA
That laid my goods now in the dustG
Yea so it was and so 'twas justG
It was His own it was not mineH
Far be it that I should repineH
He might of all justly bereftI
But yet sufficient for us leftI
When by the ruins oft I pastJ
My sorrowing eyes aside did castJ
And here and there the places spyE
Where oft I sat and long did lieE
Here stood that trunk and there that chestK
There lay that store I counted bestK
My pleasant things in ashes lieE
And them behold no more shall IE
Under thy roof no guest shall sitL
Nor at thy table eat a bitL
No pleasant tale shall e'er be toldM
Nor things recounted done of oldM
No candle e'er shall shine in theeN
Nor bridegroom's voice e'er heard shall beN
In silence ever shall thou lieE
Adieu Adieu all's vanityN
Then straight I 'gin my heart to chideO
And did thy wealth on earth abideO
Didst fix thy hope on mold'ring dustG
The arm of flesh didst make thy trustG
Raise up thy thoughts above the skyE
That dunghill mists away may flyE
Thou hast an house on high erectP
Framed by that mighty ArchitectP
With glory richly furnishedQ
Stands permanent though this be fledR
It's purchased and paid for tooS
By Him who hath enough to doS
A price so vast as is unknownH
Yet by His gift is made thine ownH
There's wealth enough I need no moreT
Farewell my pelf farewell my storeT
The world no longer let me loveU
My hope and treasure lies aboveU
