Lovers whose lifted hands are candles in winterA
Whose gentle ways like streams in the easy summerA
Lying togetherA
For secret setting of a child love what they doB
Thinking they make that candle immortal those streamsC
forever flowD
And yet do better than they knowD
-
So the first flutter of a baby felt in the wombE
Its little signal and promise of riches to comeF
Is taken in its father's nameG
Its life is the body of his love like his caressH
First delicate and strange that daily useI
Makes dearer and pricelessJ
-
Our baby was to be the living sign of our joyK
Restore to each the other's lost infancyL
To a painter's pillaging eyeM
Poet's coiled hearing add the heart we might earnN
By the help of love all that our passion would yieldO
We put to planning our childP
-
The world flowed in whatever we liked we tookQ
For its hair the gold curls of the November oakR
We saw on our walkS
Snowberries that make a Milky Way in the woodT
For its tender hands calm screen of the frozen floodU
For our care of its childhoodT
-
But the birth of a child is an uncontrollable gloryL
Cat's cradle of hopes will hold no living babyL
Long though it lay quietlyL
And when our baby stirs and struggles to be bornV
It compels humility what we beganW
Is now its ownX
-
For as the sun that shines through glassY
So Jesus in His Mother wasZ
Therefore every human creatureA
Since it shares in His natureA
In candle gold passion or whiteA2
Sharp star should show its own way of lightA2
May no parental dread or dreamB2
Darken our darling's early beamB2
May she grow to her right powersC2
Unperturbed by passion of oursC2
