Sonnet Xxxix. Winter Evening Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAACDAEFEFEF G

When mourn the dark Winds o'er the lonely plainA
And from pale noon sinks ere the fifth cold hourB
The transient light Imagination's powerB
With Knowledge and with Science in her trainA
Not unpropitious Hyems' icy reignA
Perceives since in the deep and silent lourC
High themes the rapt concent'ring Thoughts exploreD
Freed from external Pleasure's glittering chainA
Then most the understanding's culture paysE
Luxuriant harvest nor shall Folly bringF
Her aids obtrusive Then with ardent gazeE
The INGENIOUS to their rich resources springF
While sullen Winter's dull imprisoning daysE
Hang on the vacant mind with flagging wingF
