Sonnet Lxviii. On The Posthumous Fame Of Doctor Johnson Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCADBBDEFEFGG

Well it becomes thee Britain to avowA
JOHNSON's high claims yet boasting that his firesB
Were of unclouded lustre TRUTH retiresC
Blushing and JUSTICE knits her solemn browA
The eyes of GRATITUDE withdraw the glowD
His moral strain inspir'd Their zeal requiresB
That thou should'st better guard the sacred LyresB
Sources of thy bright fame than to bestowD
Perfection's wreath on him whose ruthless handE
Goaded by jealous rage the laurels toreF
That JUSTICE TRUTH and GRATITUDE demandE
Should deck those Lyres till Time shall be no moreF
A radiant course did Johnson's Glory runG
But large the spots that darken'd on its SunG
