Sonnet Lvii. Written The Night Preceding The [1]funeral Of Mrs. Charles Buckeridge Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBABBCADDEDED F

In the chill silence of the winter eveA
Thro' Lichfield's darken'd streets I bend my wayB
By that sad mansion where NERINA's ClayB
Awaits the MORNING KNELL and awed perceiveA
In the late bridal chamber the clear rayB
Of numerous lights while o'er the ceiling strayB
Shadows of those who frequent pass beneathC
Round the PALE DEAD What sounds my senses grieveA
For now the busy hammer's stroke appalsD
That in dread note of preparation fallsD
Closing the sable lid With sighs I bearE
These solemn warnings from the House of WoesD
Pondering how late for young NERINA thereE
Joyous the Love illumin'd Morn aroseD
-
In Lichfield Cathedral the funeral rites are performed early in the MorningF
