The knell of WHITEHEAD tolls his cares are pastA
The hapless tribute of his purchas'd laysB
His servile his Egyptian tasks of praiseB
If not sublime his strains Fame justly plac'dC
Their power above their work Now with wide gazeB
Of much indignant wonder she surveysB
To the life labouring oar assiduous hasteC
A glowing Bard by every Muse embrac'dC
O WARTON chosen Priest of Phoebus' choirD
Shall thy rapt song be venal hymn the THRONEE
Whether its edicts just applause inspireF
Or PATRIOT VIRTUE view them with a frownG
What needs for this the golden stringed LyreF
The snowy Tunic and the Sun bright ZoneE
