M cenas I conjure thee ceaseA
To wake my harp's enamour'd stringsB
To tones that fright recumbent PeaceA
That Pleasure flies on rapid wingsB
-
Slow conquest on Numantia's plainC
Or Hannibal that dauntless stoodD
Tho' thrice he saw Ausonia's mainC
Redden with Carthaginian bloodE
-
The Lapith 's remorseless prideF
Hyl us' wild inebriate hoursG
The Giants who the Gods defiedF
And shook old Saturn's splendid towersG
-
These dear M cenas thou should'st paintH
Each glory of thy C sar's reignC
In eloquence that scorns restraintH
And sweeter than the Poet's strainC
-
Show captive Kings who from the fightI
Drag at his wheels their galling chainC
And the pale lip indignant biteI
With mutter'd vengeance wild and vainC
-
Enraptur'd by Licinia's graceJ
My Muse would these high themes declineK
Charm'd that the heart the form the faceJ
Of matchless Excellence is thineK
-
Ah happy Friend for whom an eyeL
Of splendid and resistless fireM
Lays all its pointed arrows byL
For the mild gleams of soft desireM
-
With what gay spirit does she foilN
The Pedant's meditated hitO
What happy archness in her smileP
What pointed meaning in her witO
-
Her cheek how pure a crimson warmsQ
When with the Nymphs in circling lineK
Bending she twines her snowy armsR
And dances round Diana's shrineK
-
M cenas would'st not thou exchangeS
The treasures gorgeous Persia poursT
The wealth of Phrygia's fertile rangeS
Or warm Arabia's spicy shoresT
-
For one light ringlet of the hairU
Which shades thy sweet Licinia's faceJ
In that dear moment when the FairU
In flying from thy fond embraceJ
-
Relenting turns her snowy neckV
To meet thy kisses half their wayW
Or when her feign'd resentments checkV
The ardors thy warm lips conveyW
-
While in her eyes the languid lightI
Betrays a yielding wish to proveX
Amid her coy yet playful flightI
The pleasing force of fervent LoveY
-
Or when in gaily frolic guiseZ
She snatches her fair self the kissA2
E'en at the instant she deniesZ
Her Lover the requested blissA2
