When I come back from secret dreamsA
In gardens deep and fairB
How very curious it seemsA
This mortal name I bearB
-
For by this name I make their breadC
And trim the household lightD
And sun the linen for the bedC
And close the door at nightD
-
I wonder who myself may beE
And whence it was I cameF
Before the Church had laid on meE
This frail and earthly nameF
-
My sponsors spake unto the LordG
And three things promised theyH
Upon my soul with one accordG
Their easy vows did layH
-
My ancient spirit heard them notI
I think it was not thereB
But in a place they had forgotI
It drank a starrier airB
-
Yes in a silent place and deepJ
There did it dance and runK
And sometimes it lay down to sleepJ
Or sprang into the sunK
-
The Priest saw not my aureole shineL
My sweet wings saw not heE
He graved me with a solemn signL
And laid a name on meE
-
Now by this name I stitch and mendM
The daughter of my homeN
By this name do I save and spendM
And when they call I comeO
-
But oh that Name that other NameF
More secret and more mineL
It burns as does the angelic flameF
Before the midmost shrineL
-
Before my soul to earth was broughtP
Into God's heart it cameF
He wrote a meaning in my thoughtP
And gave to me a NameF
-
By this Name do I ride the airB
And dance from star to starQ
And I behold all things are fairB
For I see them as they areQ
-
I plunge into the deepest seasR
In flames I laughing burnS
In roseate clouds I take my easeR
Nor to the earth returnS
-
It is my beauteous Name my ownT
That I have never heardU
God keeps it for Himself aloneT
That strange and lovely wordU
-
God keeps it for Himself but yetV
You are His voice and soW
In your heart He is calling meE
And unto you I goW
-
Love by this Name I sing and breatheX
A fresh mysterious airB
By this I innocently wreatheX
New garlands for my hairB
-
By this Name I am born anewY
More beautiful more brightD
More roseate than angelic dewY
Apparelled in delightD
-
I'll sing and stitch and make the breadC
In the wonder of my NameF
And sun the linen for the bedC
And tend the fireside flameF
-
By this Name do I answer yesZ
Word beautiful and trueY
By this I'll sew the bridal dressZ
I shall put on for youY
