To His Worthy Friend Doctor Witty Upon His Translation Of The Popular Errors Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGEEHHII EEJJJJJJKKLLMMIIJJJJ

Sit further and make room for thine own fameA
Where just desert enrolles thy honour'd NameA
The good Interpreter Some in this taskB
Take of the Cypress vail but leave a maskB
Changing the Latine but do more obscureC
That sence in English which was bright and pureC
So of Translators they are Authors grownD
For ill Translators make the Book their ownD
Others do strive with words and forced phraseE
To add such lustre and so many rayesE
That but to make the Vessel shining theyF
Much of the precious Metal rub awayF
He is Translations thief that addeth moreG
As much as he that taketh from the StoreG
Of the first Author Here he maketh blotsE
That mends and added beauties are but spotsE
Caelia whose English doth more richly flowH
Then Tagus purer then dissolved snowH
And sweet as are her lips that speak it sheI
Now learns the tongues of France and ItalyI
But she is Caelia still no other graceE
But her own smiles commend that lovely faceE
Her native beauty's not ItalianatedJ
Nor her chast mind into the French translatedJ
Her thoughts are English though her sparkling witJ
With other Language doth them fitly fitJ
Translators learn of her but stay I slideJ
Down into Error with the Vulgar tideJ
Women must not teach here the Doctor dothK
Stint them to Cawdles Almond milk and BrothK
Now I reform and surely so will allL
Whose happy Eyes on thy Translation fallL
I see the people hastning to thy BookM
Liking themselves the worse the more they lookM
And so disliking that they nothing seeI
Now worth the liking but thy Book and theeI
And if I Judgement have I censure rightJ
For something guides my hand that I must writeJ
You have Translations statutes best fulfil'dJ
That handling neither sully nor would guildJ
