Santa Claus Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCABDEFFDE GHIIJH EKLMEK NEIINE CEIICE

Halt Who goes there the sentry's callA
Rose on the midnight airB
Above the noises of the campC
The roll of wheels the horses' trampC
The challenge echoed over allA
Halt Who goes thereB
A quaint old figure clothed in whiteD
He bore a staff of pineE
And ivy wreath was on his headF
Advance O friend the sentry saidF
Advance for this is Christmas NightD
And give the countersignE
-
No sign or countersign have IG
Through many lands I roamH
The whole world over far and wideI
To exiles all at ChristmastideI
From those who love them tenderlyJ
I bring a thought of homeH
-
From English brook and Scottish burnE
From cold Canadian snowsK
From those far lands ye hold most dearL
I bring you all a greeting hereM
A frond of a New Zealand fernE
A bloom of English roseK
-
From faithful wife and loving lassN
I bring a wish divineE
For Christmas blessings on your headI
I wish you well the sentry saidI
But here alas you may not passN
Without the countersignE
-
He vanished and the sentry's trampC
Re echoed down the lineE
It was not till the morning lightI
The soldiers knew that in the nightI
Old Santa Claus had come to campC
Without the countersignE
