Scene Kaupa is seduced by wealth and powerA
-
Kaupa accepts ChristianityB
-
In mighty ancient RomeC
The Pope's eternal SeeB
He called from Peter's domeC
The Holy Land to freeB
-
The Baltic he decreedD
To be the Holy LandE
All knights from sin he freedD
Committed by their handE
If in the Baltic's boundsF
They fought the pagan foeG
Built castles in strong groundsF
That priests might safely goG
-
His call to arms soon raisedH
A fortune seeking bandE
Who loud the venture praisedH
They sought estates and landE
Such men their fate pursueI
And sail to foreign shoresJ
They seek a homeland newI
And follow no man's lawsK
-
In Peter's Church one dayL
The Pope absolved their sinM
A bishop gave to prayL
And leaders from his kinM
At last to those he turnedN
Come from the Baltic shoreO
His blessings Dietrich earnedN
To Kaupa he gave moreO
-
They were allowed with graceP
To kiss his slippered feetQ
With Kaupa face to faceP
The Pope then deigned to meetQ
He asked of Baltic tribesR
If Christ's true faith they soughtS
The faith now sent with scribesR
To them as brothers broughtS
-
Theirs were as brothers tooI
The benefits and moreO
That round them stood in viewI
Or on the way they sawT
Yet all of that was slightU
Against the endless priceV
That is believers' rightU
When death brings paradiseV
-
Now Kaupa thought of homeC
The wealth could not denyW
In Peter's Church in RomeC
Arrayed before his eyeW
His ancient sires seemed weakX
Their gods could not thus blessY
He vowed the God to seekX
Who gave such happinessZ
-
He would resist no moreO
Such opulence evadeA2
On reaching home he sworeO
His people to persuadeA2
-
As Kaupa now bowed downB2
The Holy Father's graceP
Conferred a knight's rich crownB2
With seven stars in placeP
Such gifts both fine and rareC2
For him alone to ownD2
To knights and bishops thereC2
Made Kaupa's favour knownD2
-
Since to the knightly throngE2
Now Kaupa numbered tooI
He soon the blessing strongE2
Of Rome's great Father knewI
Back in the Baltic landE
His will he would assertF2
With weapons in his handE
The Baltic to convertF2
-
In monasteries remainedG2
The youths thence Kaupa boreO
Great knowledge there they gainedG2
From monks to learn they sworeO
Among them in that placeP
One's later fame has grownD2
Although of Latvian raceP
As Henry he is knownD2
-
Riga becomes the centre of German influenceH2
-
The springtime had returnedN
In green it clothed the daysI2
New life all nature earnedN
And sang the maker's praiseI2
-
But Strangers saw no worthJ2
To raise their eyes and seeB
Who made the bounteous EarthJ2
And nature caused to beB
They had a different goalK2
An idle life to craveL2
And drunkenness extolK2
But others to enslaveL2
-
On Daugava's bank the folkM2
In hundreds hewed and filledN2
Forged iron hammered oakM2
A city toiled to buildN2
With ramparts fortifiedO2
Arch passage columns tallP2
A church stood safe insideO2
Within its lofty wallP2
-
Named Riga on the banksQ2
It stood on Daugava's sideO2
Within its church's ranksQ2
Ruled Bishop Albert's prideO2
His priests with news he sentR2
The message of our LordS2
But to their preaching lentR2
The power of the swordS2
-
They went throughout the landE
To teach and preach of HimT2
But plundered out of handE
And murdered at their whimT2
The Daugava alongE2
They cast a deadly pallU2
And soon the fear was strongE2
These monsters would take allP2
-
All Germans who now cameV2
In Riga place receivedW2
The folk cursed Riga's nameV2
And knew they were deceivedW2
-
Oh Riga much have youI
Poured out our brothers' bloodX2
Oh Riga much have tooI
Caused bitter tears to floodX2
-
Oh Riga much you spurnedN
Laid waste the fields of grainY2
Oh Riga much you burnedN
Scarce homes and barns remainY2
-
Oh Riga you have seizedZ2
Like wolves our humble foodA3
Oh Riga you have pleasedZ2
To swill the beer we brewedA3
-
Oh Riga you have tornB3
Our plundered things awayL
Oh Riga you have swornB3
With freedom we will payL
-
Oh Riga can you findC3
Yet things that we hold dearD3
Oh Riga what behindC3
Is left for looting hereE3

Scene Laimdota and Koknesis in GermanyB
-
Laimdota's abductionF3
-
While all of this took placeP
Where down the Daugava fallsG3
In Germany's far spaceP
Behind a cloister's wallsG3
A weeping maiden layL
To dear ones no recourseH3
From them false lured awayL
And carried off by forceH3
-
Laimdota was the maidA2
And Spidala's base liesI3
Deception's guile displayedA2
Clad in her mother's guiseI3
She lured the girl outsideO2
Where helpers in her payL
Forth made Laimdota rideO2
From Burtnieks awayL
-
A prisoner in their mightU
To Turaida they broughtS
And further in the nightU
The Daugava they soughtS
Ignoring tears and pleasJ3
Their mercy to imploreO
They put her on the seasJ3
To sail to German shoreO
-
On board was Dietrich tooI
Who came to seek her earE3
Proposed a calming viewI
And claimed she need not fearD3
Since countrymen she knewI
On board were at her callP2
Of Kaupa servants trueI
No evil could befallP2
-
To study life they wentR2
Among the German raceP
Enlightened with the bentR2
The faith of Christ to faceP
God's mercy deep and wideO2
Christ soon to her would showG
Selected as His brideO2
Through Him true God to knowG
-
Laimdota listened graveL2
Contempt burned in her eyeW
Then answer briefly gaveL2
A dignified replyW
Though Christ from God aboveK3
Takes brides against their willL3
I cannot give my loveK3
A promise binds me stillL3
-
I love a hero boldM3
Have pledged to him my handE
My father's leave we holdM3
Our hearts united standE
So therefore let me goG
And tempt me not in vainY2
Or retribution knowG
And suffer for my painY2
-
But more My mother's childN3
Of humans I am oneF3
My mortal flesh defiledN3
Not fit for God's true SonF3
-
Though evil to the coreO
No conscience to feel shameV2
Yet Dietrich flushed once moreO
As though he felt the blameV2
Struck by the maid's lamentN3
Of further words bereftN3
In silence hence he wentN3
Alone Laimdota leftN3
-
Her lot did not improveO3
Though liberty she soughtN3
False Kaupa did not moveO3
To help her as he oughtN3
He said it was Fate's planP3
And so she must remainY2
Until its course Fate ranP3
And took her home againQ3
-
And thus he saw no crimeR3
If Dietrich fitting foundN3
To put her for some timeR3
Within a cloister's boundN3
The ferment was so greatN3
On board that was his lotN3
The maid Laimdota's fateN3
Enthralled he soon forgotN3
-
Soon heartless Dietrich tooN3
Ceased thinking of the girlS3
Because full well he knewN3
A rich and precious pearlS3
A cloister had receivedN3
The grateful prioressP
About his goals deceivedN3
Was sure his scheme to blessP
-
The prioress deferredN3
Laimdota showed respectN3
But still to preach preferredN3
Advice did not neglectN3
To leave old gods behindN3
The faith of Christ to takeT3
And when the maid declinedN3
Harsh threats began to makeT3
-
She threatened to condoneD2
Support a knight's designU3
Laimdota as his ownD2
To make a concubineU3
-
Laimdota heard this viewN3
And felt a surging fearD3
Fore all because she knewN3
An earl's son had been nearD3
Kin to the prioressP
He had the maiden seenV3
Her beauty to possessP
His fervent wish had beenM
-
He urged the nuns anewN3
The girl to him to giveW3
The earl was of the viewN3
Those who unchristian liveX3
No rights had in that landN3
To take the maid his whimT2
To do with by his handN3
What deed perchance pleased himT2
-
So time Laimdota soughtN3
To plan how she could copeY3
But time no counsel broughtN3
In vain her rescue hopeY3
-
Soon came the fateful dayN3
So she the prioress toldN3
Her gods were laid awayN3
All teachings of the oldN3
The things that she had learnedN3
Through Burtnieks embracedN3
In truth Christ's faith she spurnedN3
And death had rather facedN3
-
-
Laimdota is rescued by KoknesisP
-
One evening having strayedN3
With tears into her bedN3
To spirits good she prayedN3
That help to her be ledN3
Then tumult loud beganP3
Spread through the cloister's boundsP
The people rushed and ranP3
And prayed with frightened soundsP
-
At length the shouting diedN3
Her room loud footsteps nearedN3
Her door was opened wideN3
And in it there appearedN3
Men all in armour cladN3
With weapons in their handN3
The guards and monks were gladN3
There at their side to standN3
-
One monk with glutton's faceP
Spoke to the armoured ranksP
The pagan take apaceP
We give her up with thanksP
For long enough has sheB
This sacred place defiledN3
Take her and ride out freeB
And cleanse our cloister mildN3
-
The monks she loud imploredN3
The prioress to callP2
Protection to affordN3
That nothing should befallP2
But they refused as oneF3
The reason was well knownD2
For with each other nunF3
The prioress had flownD2
-
Of plunderers in fearD3
Their church the nuns sought fastN3
And forth would not appearD3
Until all risk was pastN3
Then iron clad hands with forceP
Laimdota dragged outsideN3
They flung her on a horseP
And made away to rideN3
-
But blocking them their placeP
A single man they sawP
He held an iron maceP
And shook it with a roarO
Release this blameless girlS3
Surrender now and leaveZ3
Or with this club I whirlS3
My arm your skulls will cleaveZ3
-
Surprised to hear this callP2
At first they heeded wellA4
But then as one they allP2
Upon the stranger fellA4
At this the man revealedN3
Strength others cannot showG
With skill he used his shieldN3
And parried every blowG
-
He swung his club with hateN3
Against each armoured headN3
The men who felt its weightN3
With cloven helmet bledN3
He struck the one with forceP
Whose steed Laimdota boreO
The man fell from his horseP
And loose his helmet toreO
-
The earl's son all espiedN3
Who lay before their eyesP
You dog the stranger criedN3
You cur in Christian guiseP
Know that this free born girlS3
Is to such honour heirC2
Unworthy any earlS3
For her her cup to bearC2
-
In virtue without lapseP
In woman's form and faceP
In Germany perhapsP
No equal has your raceP
-
Go To your comrades runF3
Tell them in Baltic landN3
Each free born woman's sonF3
Will crush them by his handN3
As I tonight did hereE3
Your life this day I spareC2
But if our lands you nearD3
Then face me if you dareC2
-
Laimdota's senses clearedN3
As this the man declaredN3
His face at last appearedN3
Beneath his helmet baredN3
A cry of joy beganP3
Within the moonlight grewN3
Laimdota saw the manP3
And straight Koknesis knewN3
-
Koknesis took her handN3
This greeting to proclaimV2
To Gods and spirits grandN3
Give thanks in time I cameV2
Together we must fleeB
We cannot here delayN3
Hence you must ride with meB
My fate learn on the wayN3
-
Into the saddle straightN3
Both leaped on horses' backsP
Rode out and did not waitN3
On rutted forest tracksP
A distant mountain hutN3
Gave shelter for the nightN3
The folk who firewood cutN3
Helped strangers in their plightN3
-
They rested for some daysP
Then rode a further stageB4
Laimdota found good waysP
Disguised to be a pageB4
Koknesis was her knightN3
They from a seaport plannedN3
By ship to make their flightN3
To reach their FatherlandN3
-
Koknesis on the wayN3
Told her his story grimT2
One night in bed he layN3
When Kangars came to himT2
Said Kaupa at the dawnC4
To Germany would goG
Dispatches must be borneB3
For Burtnieks to knowG
-
Since Burtnieks aloneD2
Kept watch on All Souls' EveZ3
Koknesis to him knownD2
The message should receiveZ3
No harm Koknesis sawP
To Turaida to goG
Where waited on the shoreO
Young men that he would knowG
-
With Kaupa soon to sailD4
Upon the German tripE4
With pleasure they would hailD4
Koknesis on the shipE4
Koknesis gave assentN3
When Kangars told his plightN3
He had no documentN3
Until the morning lightN3
-
Aboard they broke their fastN3
And Kangars gave them wineU3
A gift from Dietrich passedN3
Since none would thirst confineU3
But drank deep at a strokeM2
They all were soon asleepF4
And when Koknesis wokeM2
The ship rocked on the deepF4
-
Just landless sea and skyW
He saw now all aroundN3
His heavy head asked whyW
And shame within him foundN3
His thirst had so prevailedN3
With appetite so hotN3
That with them he had sailedN3
If this he willed or notN3
-
The others swift condoledN3
That not all bad would beB
And with the thought consoledN3
Soon Germany to seeB
-
To Germany now sentN3
With monks to live and learnG4
Koknesis seemed contentN3
New wisdom thus to earnG4
But visits soon he paidN3
And time spent with an earlS3
There to the knights displayedN3
His strength in jousting's whirlS3
-
All there his skill admiredN3
His agile arm's strong weightN3
But news was not acquiredN3
About Laimdota's fateN3
But later there he heardN3
That in a cloister's courtN3
A woman was interredN3
Thence from the Baltic broughtN3
-
The earl desired the maidN3
To seize her deemed it rightN3
The cloister's grounds to raidN3
And steal her in the nightN3
Her fate Koknesis knewN3
Thus earnest vow he gaveL2
The unknown maiden trueN3
From such a fate to saveL2
-
When at the cloister gateN3
Laimdota's face he sawP
He felt an endless hateN3
And caution was no moreO
And thus the slaughter grewN3
No mercy would he showG
The earl's son humbled tooN3
For misdeeds pain must knowG

Scene In the Realm of the North WindN3
-
The boatmen's song summons the North Wind's DaughterA
-
Long parted from the quayB
Thus sang the sailor folkM2
Upon the Northern SeaB
Good fortune to invokeM2
-
Oh father build a shipE4
Oh mother weave the sailD4
We seek straight from the slipE4
The North Wind's Daughter paleD4
-
We travel night and dayN3
No North Wind's Daughter findN3
And reach a northern bayN3
Where snow three giants grindN3
-
'Our greetings grinders threeB
Comes North Wind's Daughter forth '-
'Thanks travellers on the seaB
No sail on further north '-
-
We travel night and dayN3
The Daughter seeking twiceP
And reach a northern bayN3
Where giants forge pure iceP
-
'Our greeting icesmiths threeB
Comes North Wind's Daughter forth '-
'Thanks travellers on the seaB
No sail on further north '-
-
Thus sang the sailor folkM2
Upon the Northern SeaB
Until the helmsman spokeM2
Their way no more was freeB
-
Bearslayer in this boatN3
Sailed on the Northern SeaB
To Germany afloatN3
To set Laimdota freeB
-
But battered by the forceP
Of wind and storm that blewN3
And lost far from the courseP
The way no more they knewN3
-
It seemed that evil powersP
Sea ghosts were ever nearD3
In day and night time hoursP
They filled the crew with fearD3
-
Dank mists and deepest gloomH4
The light blocked as they swirledN3
While hail and snow filled spumeH4
Were by the North Wind hurledN3
-
Then where the sky's edge gleamedN3
A brilliant glow forth surgedN3
And from the glow what seemedN3
To be a sail emergedN3
-
Across the dark sea waveL2
Its course approached them nearD3
Close up assurance gaveL2
It was a ship was clearD3
-
And at the helmsman's sideN3
A woman they could viewN3
Who nearing sweetly criedN3
In greeting to the crewN3
-
Your song to my ears cameH4
Called me across the seaB
You called aloud my nameH4
Say what you want from meB
-
The sailors were amazedN3
And stood as turned to stoneD2
In wonder they all gazedN3
The North Wind's Daughter shownD2
-
Her face was peach and creamH4
Reflected in the glareC2
Eyes blue as Heaven's gleamH4
Shone in the north's pure airC2
-
Her hair was long and goldN3
And to her shoulders hungI4
She wore they could beholdN3
A rainbow robe that clungI4
-
And on her form flowed downB2
A snow white woollen shawlP2
Upon her head no crownB2
Instead a helmet tallP2
-
And weapons she had tooN3
Within the ship there seenV3
Bow spear and shield on viewN3
Stout forged from copper greenV3
-
Thus was the Daughter's formH4
About which legends tellA4
That she provokes the stormH4
All sailors know full wellA4
-
With terrors she can soarO
Into the northern heightN3
Lead souls of men to warO
All formed up for the fightN3
-
And when each lets his spearD3
In warlike manner flyW
On earth the people fearD3
Say War and plague are nighW
-
-
In the domain of the North Wind's DaughterA
-
As first Bearslayer stirredN3
The North Wind's Daughter toldN3
That lost they were interredN3
Within the northern coldN3
But their desire was clearD3
The homeward course to findN3
The North Wind's Daughter hereE3
To help might be inclinedN3
-
The Maiden now explainedN3
That this was hard to doN3
Few crews the course obtainedN3
A very seldom fewN3
To trap them in this deepF4
Great storms the North Wind sentN3
Her father who his sleepF4
In ice bound caverns spentN3
-
Yet longer he would restN3
Perhaps a month in allP2
For them to stay were bestN3
Safe in her island hallP2
Then later firm she sworeO
To strive hard for their sakeT3
No course Bearslayer sawP
But her advice to takeT3
-
The North Wind's Daughter steeredN3
Her ship sailed further onJ4
To where bright had appearedN3
The glow that earlier shoneD2
And at an island's shoreO
Its hills in icy gripE4
Her craft she docked once moreO
Here led Bearslayer's shipE4
-
She took him with his crewN3
Far inland from the shoreO
Where they with wondering viewN3
A splendid castle sawP
Its towers roof and wallsP
Of ice were frozen hardN3
They stayed outside its hallsP
The North Wind's sleep to guardN3
-
Across broad fields of snowG
Rose smoke clouds from the landN3
Her guests she told to goG
And gestured with her handN3
Some way they went apaceP
The air soon ceased to freezeP
And snow drifts now gave placeP
To fields and groves of treesP
-
Within a garden fairC2
Was deep as Hell a pitN3
Whence flames shot in the airC2
From fires eternal litN3
As they at Earth's core burnedN3
Their endless flames rose hotN3
This icy island turnedN3
Into a verdant plotN3
-
Dense foliage full of fruitN3
Hung there upon each treeB
With babbling brooks to suitN3
All creatures lived carefreeB
Wild birds and beasts of preyN3
But farmyard creatures tooN3
Could flourish here and playN3
In meadows sweet with dewN3
-
The North Wind's Daughter's spearD3
Upon her shield struck thriceP
This made small folk appearD3
From all sides in a triceP
At Earth's far edge they dwelledN3
And served the Maid's behestN3
These folk she now compelledN3
To welcome every guestN3
-
A pavilion they observedN3
Where tables full were laidN3
Delicious food was servedN3
And all was ready madeN3
The North Wind's Daughter badeN3
Her guests should there appearD3
And while they ate was gladN3
To serve to each sweet beerD3
-
Another tent againQ3
Had beds all warm preparedN3
That rest might dull the painY2
Of hardships they had sharedN3
-
No sun could come or goG
They knew not day or nightN3
Yet still the pit's bright glowG
Gave forth sufficient lightN3
-
The time passed full of easeP
Of pleasures they were sureK4
Each day as much could pleaseP
As had the one beforeO
-
They stayed a goodly spellA4
Could all their needs fulfilA4
It pleased them there so wellA4
To leave none had the willA4
-
-
Scene The journey backL4
-
They leave the Northern LandN3
-
At last Bearslayer stirredN3
The Maiden he imploredN3
To show the course preferredN3
And let them go on boardN3
The North Wind's Daughter gaveL2
Her vow all to fulfilA4
But sought their lives to saveL2
With better counsel stillA4
-
For he should not retraceP
The path he took beforeO
Because he there would faceP
His enemies of yoreO
Who now might well succeedN3
To smash him with their forceP
Therefore he should proceedN3
Along a better courseP
-
This path was long to goG
And full of risks severeD3
But known not to the foeG
Whose envy he must fearD3
The course would lead him pastN3
The Land of Ogres thenQ3
Along the coast at lastN3
To reach his home againQ3
-
Like people with dog's jawP
Thus was the ogres' formH4
They ate their meat while rawM4
And drank fresh blood still warmH4
No mercy could distractN3
Their hunt for humankindN3
On foot their prey they trackedN3
Killed all that they could findN3
-
Still men could foil their huntN3
By wearing footwear turnedN3
The heel towards the frontN3
So none their path discernedN3
Still further was a landN3
Where lived in caves deep setN3
Of little folk a bandN3
Who helped all those they metN3
-
Within their lands were foundN3
The Gardens of the SunF3
So when it from the groundN3
Rose up its course to runF3
It hung close to your handN3
Which meant at dawn of dayN3
In caves they had to standN3
Or burn up in its rayN3
-
Here shelves nobody knewN3
Nor cups on hooks hung looseP
Behind the clouds they threwN3
Their spoons straight after useP
To get the washing cleanV3
The maids boiled what they wearC2
Then clouds of steam were seenV3
And storms formed in the airC2
-
On leaving from this landN3
No more they would see skyW
But in the darkness standN3
And endless sea pass byW
At length their eyes would sightN3
A Hill of Diamonds rareC2
That sparkles giving lightN3
Yet none to land should dareC2
-
Bright shining is the peakX
It glistens without stopN4
But let no sailor seekX
To climb up to the topN4
Still further on their wayN3
The sky would lighten thenQ3
The night would yield to dayN3
And they would see againQ3
-
A verdant island nearD3
Its beauty plain would showG
But let them all know fearD3
And never closer goG
This island to it drawsP
All vessels from the seaB
And once upon its shoresP
They never more come freeB
-
If cunning he revealedN3
Through all these troubles passedN3
The Northern Sea would yieldN3
And bring him home at lastN3
-
Heartfelt Bearslayer thenQ3
His earnest thanks could sayN3
Together called his menQ3
To set out on their wayN3
But quickly they all scornedN3
Their life of ease to breakT3
The North Wind's Daughter warnedN3
Her father soon would wakeT3
-
Then all would be in vainY2
Their homes they would not reachO4
They hurried back againQ3
And rushed down to the beachO4
Their ship they found safe thereC2
As it had been beforeO
It needed no repairC2
To leave this northern shoreO
-
But ice flows formed up fastN3
And ringed them all aroundN3
They felt earth tremors vastN3
That shook the island's groundN3
The North Wind's Daughter's criesP
Were Save yourselves and goG
My father soon will riseP
And winter storms will blowG
-
Then all knew that they mustN3
At once raise up the sailA4
And with the wind's first gustN3
They tried to flee the galeA4
They scarcely were at seaB
When with a tempest's roarO
The snow capped waves rose freeB
The North Wind slept no moreO
-
In fear of death the crewN3
Exerted all their strengthP4
Before the wind they flewN3
And got to sea at lengthP4
-
-
The Land of the Dog Snout OgresB
-
Long hours in waves they heavedN3
Until about to drownB2
Their troubles were relievedN3
Land found the anchor downB2
They seemed from death here savedN3
But new risks were at handN3
Blown by the storm just bravedN3
Into the Ogres' LandN3
-
The storm its course had runF3
The sea could gently rockQ4
The sailors had begunF3
To take of things good stockQ4
The ship survived the stormH4
Which showed that it was strongE2
Repairs they would performH4
Their voyage then prolongE2
-
As far as eye could sightN3
It was an empty shoreO
The crew thus thought it rightN3
To go on land once moreO
-
Upon a mossy riseB
Some doe were grazing nearD3
Bearslayer for suppliesB
Went out to hunt the deerD3
A hope formed from this sceneV3
These parts could well be clearD3
No Dog Snouts might have beenM
Perhaps they need not fearD3
-
Bearslayer with some menQ3
Approached the mossy hillA4
Already deer for themH4
He had contrived to killA4
And now with dagger blowsB
This meat they would share roundN3
Then from the hill aroseB
A horrid shrieking soundN3
-
And from a cave now pouredN3
The Dog Faced Monsters outN3
Surrounded by this hordeN3
The men yet battled stoutN3
But doglike teeth soon rippedN3
To shreds men fighting hereE3
Bearslayer firmly grippedN3
And faced them with his spearD3
-
He stabbed the howling gangsB
But still could not preventN3
That with their vicious fangsB
His hip and side they rentN3
He had not found the strengthP4
To hold them long aloneD2
If not a thought at lengthP4
Had saving counsel shownD2
-
No monsters any moreO
Were pouring from the caveL2
So he rushed to its doorO
Therein himself to saveL2
Now standing in this wayN3
He could with sturdy limbH4
Drive off or quickly slayN3
All those that ran at himH4
-
A howl the monsters gaveL2
When first they saw this trickR4
Then rolled before the caveL2
Great boulders broad and thickR4
They heaped the stones untilA4
The entrance they securedN3
Bearslayer waited stillA4
Within the cave immuredN3
-
The sailors could not waitN3
Until the hunters cameH4
But orders did not stateN3
To seek them all the sameH4
They worked on board untilA4
All readied was to sailA4
Their comrades missing stillA4
They sought to no availA4
-
They felt a special careC2
About Bearslayer tooN3
Without his presence thereC2
They knew not what to doN3
But then the helmsman criedN3
Bearslayer comes see nowS4
And soon with hurried strideN3
He reached the ship's sharp prowS4
-
He did not wish to waitN3
But sailed without delayN3
Then told the hunters' fateN3
And how he got awayN3
-
Low in the cave's dark rearD3
An opening small he foundN3
That with his heavy spearD3
He widened all aroundN3
Within the cave there layN3
Some half raw scraps of meatN3
Of that on every dayN3
A portion he could eatN3
-
And after some days moreO
He fled from in the caveL2
The Dog Snouts to the doorO
Their full attention gaveL2
And so they had no chanceB
He gave them all the slipE4
Without a backward glanceB
He set off to the shipE4
-
They travelled far once moreO
Across the distant seaB
Until they reached the shoreO
A land where they were freeB
-
-
The Kingdom of DreamsB
-
The East of legend placeB
Where dreams their kingdom findN3
First bore the human raceB
The cradle of our kindN3
Here sky and ground both mergeT4
Do not exist apartN3
The gates at Heaven's vergeT4
Near Hell's domain here startN3
-
Here is the home beholdN3
The sons of Perkons wonF3
Where bright they forge their goldN3
In Gardens of the SunF3
Its Daughters care devoteN3
Grow golden apples brightN3
Safe in a diamond boatN3
Here sleeps the Sun each nightN3
-
Each morning new its steedsB
Swim in the ocean's tideN3
With golden reins it leadsB
Them from a mountainsideN3
-
The people living hereE3
Enjoy a happy lotN3
Like children nothing fearD3
Of evil know no jotN3
The Gods' Sons them protectN3
From what foul spirits doN3
Their destiny close directN3
The Sun's fair Daughters tooN3
-
Bearslayer stayed here longE2
And with his men lived throughN3
Of happy days a throngE2
Saw many wonders tooN3
The people of the landN3
Protected them from harmH4
And sought to show the bandN3
The country's special charmH4
-
The Gardens of the SunF3
Alone they did not showG
To live mankind must shunF3
The splendour of their glowG
-
-
The Hill of DiamondsB
-
Bearslayer once againQ3
To set off homeward choseB
The happy day came whenQ3
Before the Sun aroseB
And crossed through Heaven's domeH4
The sails were raised up highW
The ship set out for homeH4
Beyond the land and skyW
-
The darkness was as thickR4
As in the depths of HellA4
The sailors could not pickR4
One from the other tellA4
But somewhere far awayN3
A glimmer caught their glanceB
They steered the ship that wayN3
To seize this happy chanceB
-
When suddenly quite nearD3
They reached the Diamond HillA4
Although in mists unclearD3
The peak bright sparkled stillA4
The golden glow they nearedN3
Whose rays like diamonds pourO
To land the helmsman steeredN3
The crewmen rushed ashoreO
-
All felt now strong the willA4
The Diamond Hill to seekX
Bearslayer warned but stillA4
One clambered to the peakX
Up on the hilltop's heightN3
With all to him revealedN3
Cried God how fair a sightN3
But then his fate was sealedN3
-
As though on wind's wings borneB3
From off the hill he flewN3
Into the air was drawnC4
And vanished from their viewN3
A second climbed up highW
To where the diamonds shoneD2
Oh God how fair his cryW
And then he too was goneC4
-
To miss this fate a thirdN3
Tied to a rope climbed tooN3
The same words all then heardN3
He also slipped from viewN3
But others seized the lineU3
And could him backwards drawP
Though he would always pineU3
And never word spoke moreO
-
Bearslayer left this hillA4
And long they sailed aroundN3
Their voyage blind untilA4
The light of day they foundN3
-
-
The Enchanted IsleA4
-
There was no more delayN3
Upon the journey thereC2
The weather every dayN3
Like all the winds was fairC2
The vessel soon sailed freeB
And hope in all was bornB3
To find the Baltic SeaB
Then came a fateful dawnC4
-
At first by fog concealedN3
An island came in sightN3
Whose beauty when revealedN3
Filled all with great delightN3
Upon Bearslayer dawnedN3
That this the coast must beB
Of which the Maiden warnedN3
That draws ships from the seaB
-
In vain to flee they soughtN3
The coast neared more and moreO
Until by magic caughtN3
They grounded on the shoreO
