Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGHG IDID GJGJ ECCCCease Laura cease suspect no more | A |
This careless heart has learnt to love | B |
Because on yonder lonely shore | A |
I still at pensive evening rove | C |
- | |
Because of Henry's worth I speak | D |
With eager warmth and sparkling eye | E |
Because his favourite haunts I seek | D |
And still o'erjoyed to meet him fly | E |
- | |
But Laura should my faltering tongue | F |
Refuse to speak in Henry's praise | G |
My trembling voice deny the song | H |
When Henry claims his favourite lays | G |
- | |
When Henry comes should I neglect | I |
With smiles the welcome youth to seek | D |
But meet him full of cold respect | I |
While conscious blushes paint my cheek | D |
- | |
Should I when Ella shares his praise | G |
Heave deeply drawn but smothered sighs | J |
And when on me he deigns to gaze | G |
Fix on the earth my conscious eyes | J |

Then I'll no more thy charge deny | E |
No more thy tender fears reprove | C |
Then Laura heave compassion's sigh | C |
For mine will be the sigh of love | C |
