The Mad Wanderer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IIII JIJI IIII KILI

There came to Grasmere's pleasant valeA
A stranger maid in tatters cladB
Whose eyes were wild whose cheek was paleA
While oft she cried Poor Kate is madB
-
Four words were all she'd ever sayC
Nor would she shelter in a cotD
And e'en in winter's coldest dayC
She still would cry My brain is hotD
-
A look she had of better daysE
And once while o'er the hills she rangedF
We saw her on her tatters gazeE
And heard her say How Kate is changedF
-
Whene'er she heard the death bell soundG
Her face grew dreadful to beholdH
She started trembled beat the groundG
And shuddering cried Poor Kate is coldH
-
And when to church we brought the deadI
She came in ragged mourning drestI
The coffin plate she trembling readI
Then laughing cried Poor Kate is blestI
-
But when a wedding peal was rungJ
With dark revengeful leer she smiledI
And curses muttering on her tongueJ
She loudly screamed Poor Kate is wildI
-
To be in Grasmere church interredI
A corpse one day from far was broughtI
Poor Kate the death bell sounding heardI
And reached the aisle as quick as thoughtI
-
When on the coffin looking downK
She started screamed and back retiredI
Then clasped it breathing such a groanL
And with that dreadful groan expiredI
