The Mad Wanderer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IIII JIJI IIII KILIThere came to Grasmere's pleasant vale | A |
A stranger maid in tatters clad | B |
Whose eyes were wild whose cheek was pale | A |
While oft she cried Poor Kate is mad | B |
- | |
Four words were all she'd ever say | C |
Nor would she shelter in a cot | D |
And e'en in winter's coldest day | C |
She still would cry My brain is hot | D |
- | |
A look she had of better days | E |
And once while o'er the hills she ranged | F |
We saw her on her tatters gaze | E |
And heard her say How Kate is changed | F |
- | |
Whene'er she heard the death bell sound | G |
Her face grew dreadful to behold | H |
She started trembled beat the ground | G |
And shuddering cried Poor Kate is cold | H |
- | |
And when to church we brought the dead | I |
She came in ragged mourning drest | I |
The coffin plate she trembling read | I |
Then laughing cried Poor Kate is blest | I |
- | |
But when a wedding peal was rung | J |
With dark revengeful leer she smiled | I |
And curses muttering on her tongue | J |
She loudly screamed Poor Kate is wild | I |
- | |
To be in Grasmere church interred | I |
A corpse one day from far was brought | I |
Poor Kate the death bell sounding heard | I |
And reached the aisle as quick as thought | I |
- | |
When on the coffin looking down | K |
She started screamed and back retired | I |
Then clasped it breathing such a groan | L |
And with that dreadful groan expired | I |
