Not one kind look one friendly wordA
Wilt thou in chilling silence sitB
Nor through the social hour affordC
One cheering smile or beam of witB
-
Yet still absorbed in studious careD
Neglect to waste one look on meE
For then my happy eyes may dareD
To gaze and dwell unchecked on theeE
-
And still in silence sit nor deignF
One gentle precious word to sayG
For silent I may then remainF
Nor let my voice my soul betrayG
-
This faltering voice these conscious eyesH
My throbbing heart too plainly speakI
There timid hopeless passion liesH
And bids it silence keep and breakJ
-
To me how dear this twilight hourK
Cheered by the faggot's varying blazeL
If this be mine I ask no moreM
On morn's refulgent light to gazeL
-
For now while on HIS glowing cheekI
I see the fire's red radiance fallN
The darkest seat I softly seekI
And gaze on HIM unseen by allN
-
His folded arms his studious browO
His thoughtful eye unmarked I seeE
Nor could his voice or words bestowP
So dear so true a joy on meE
-
But he forgets that I am nearQ
Fame future fame in thought he seeksR
To him ambition's paths appearQ
And bright the sun of science breaksS
-
His heart with ardent hope is filledT
His prospects full of beauty bloomU
But oh my heart despair has chilledT
My only prospect is the tombU
-
One only boon from Heaven I claimV
And may it grant the fond desireK
That I may live to hear his fameV
And in that throb of joy expireW
-
Oft hast thou marked my chilling eyeX
And mourned my cold reserve to seeE
Resolved the fickle friend to flyX
Who seemed unjust to worth and theeE
-
While I o'erjoyed thy anger sawY
Blest proof I had not tried in vainF
To give imperious passion lawY
And hide my bosom's conscious painF
-
But when night's sheltering darkness cameV
And none the conscious wretch could viewZ
How fiercely burned the smothered flameV
How deep was every sigh I drewZ
-
Yet still to thee I'll clothe my browO
In all that jealous pride requiresA2
My look the type of tna's snowP
My heart of tna's secret firesA2
-
One little moment short as blestB2
Compassion Love's soft semblance woreM
My meagre form he fondly pressedB2
And on his beating bosom boreM
-
His frame with strong emotion shookC2
And kindness tuned each faltering wordA
While I surprised with anxious lookC2
The meaning of his glance exploredC
-
But soon my too experienced heartD2
Read nought but generous pity thereD
I felt presumptuous hope departD2
And all again was dark despairD
-
Yet still in memory still my heartD2
Lives o'er that fleeting bliss againE2
I feel his glance his touch impartD2
Emotion through each bursting veinF
-
And Once I cry those eyes so sweetF2
On me with fondness deigned to shineG2
For once I felt his bosom beatF2
Against the conscious throbs of mineG2
-
Nor shall the dear remembrance dieX
While aught of life to me is givenH2
But soothe my last convulsive sighX
And be till then my joy my heavenH2
