Ode, Written On The Opening Of The Last Campaign Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFGHIHJKLK MNMNOPOQRSBSEOEOSpring thy impatient bloom restrain | A |
Nor wake so soon thy genial pow'r | B |
For deeds of death must hail thy reign | A |
And clouds of fate around thee low'r | B |
Alas not all thy store of charms | C |
For patriot hearts can comfort find | D |
Or lull to peace the dread alarms | C |
Which rack the friends of human kind | D |
In vain thy balmy breath to me | E |
Scents with its sweets the ev'ning gale | F |
In vain the violet's charms I see | E |
Or fondly mark thy primrose pale | F |
To me thy softest zephyrs breathe | G |
Of sorrow's soul distracting tone | H |
To me thy most attractive wreath | I |
Seems ting'd with human blood alone | H |
Arrest thy steps thou source of love | J |
Thou genial friend of joy and life | K |
Let not thy smile propitious prove | L |
To works of carnage scenes of strife | K |
Bid Winter all his frowns recall | M |
And back his icy footsteps trace | N |
Again the soil in frost inthrall | M |
And check the War fiend's murd'rous chace | N |
Ah fruitless pray'r thy hand divine | O |
MUST on the teeming season lead | P |
And contrast dire at War's red shrine | O |
Must bid unnumber'd victims bleed | Q |
But not in vain if on this hour | R |
The fate of Freedom shall depend | S |
If o'er this earth th' Eternal Pow'r | B |
The scale of Justice now extend | S |
For then O Spring thy sun shall see | E |
The patriot flame triumphant shine | O |
GALLIA shall bid the world be free | E |
And WAR his blood stain'd throne resign | O |
