Originally called the Place de Louis Seize next the Place de laA
Revolution where the perpetual guillotine stoodB
-
-
PROUD Seine along thy winding tideC
Fair smiles yon plain expanding wideC
And deckt with art and nature's prideC
Seems formed for jocund revelryD
-
Scene formed the eye of taste to pleaseE
There splendid domes attention seizeE
There proudly towering spreading treesE
Arise in beauteous rivalryD
-
But there's a place amidst that plainF
Which bids its beauties beam in vainF
Which wakes the inmost soul to painF
And prompts the throb of agonyD
-
That place by day lo numbers flyG
And shuddering start to see it nighG
Who there at midnight breathe the sighG
Of faithful suffering loyaltyD
-
While blending with those loyal sighsH
Oft times the patriot's murmurs riseH
Who thither hid by darkness fliesH
To mourn the sons of libertyD
-
Lo as amidst that plain I strayI
Methinks strange sadness shrouds the dayI
And clothed in slaughter's red arrayI
Appears the scene of gayetyI
-
For once that spot was dark with bloodI
There death's destroying engine stoodI
There streamed alas the vital floodI
Of all that graced humanityI
-
Ah since this fair domain ye choseJ
Dread ruffians for your murderous blowsJ
Could not the smiling scene uncloseJ
Your hearts to love and charityI
-
No horrid contrast on that sceneK
The murderer reared his poniard keenK
There proudly stalked with hideous mienK
The blood stained sons of anarchyI
-
Nor Gallia shall thy varied mirthL
Thy store of all that graces earthL
Ere give a kind oblivion birthL
To thy recorded crueltyI
-
In all thy pomp of charms and powerM
Earth can alas forget no moreN
The awful guilt that stains thy shoreN
With dies of sanguine tyrannyI
-
Than they who see blue lightnings beamO
Can ere forget though fair they seemO
That danger lurks in every gleamO
And death's appalling agencyI
