Lines On The Opening Of A Spring Campaign Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF HIJI KLKL MNMO

Spring thy impatient bloom restrainA
Nor wake so soon thy genial powerB
For deeds of death must hail thy reignA
And clouds of fate around thee lowerB
-
In vain thy balmy breath to meC
Scents with its sweets the evening galeD
In vain the violet's charms I seeC
Or fondly mark thy primrose paleD
-
To me thy softest zephyrs breatheE
Of sorrow's soul disparting toneF
To me thy most attractive wreathG
Seems tinged with human blood aloneF
-
Arrest thy steps thou source of loveH
Thou genial friend of joy and lifeI
Let not thy smile propitious proveJ
To works of carnage scenes of strifeI
-
Bid winter all his frowns recallK
And back his icy footsteps traceL
Again the soil in frost enthralK
And check the war fiend's murderous chaseL
-
Fond fruitless prayer Thy hand divineM
The smiling season on must leadN
And still at war's ensanguined shrineM
Must bid unnumbered victims bleedO
