' And that a reply be received before midnight 'A
British UltimatumB
-
-
Their Day was at twelve of the nightC
When the graves give up their deadD
And still from the City no lightC
Yellows the clouds overheadD
Where the Admiral stands there's a starE
But his column is lost in the gloomF
For the brazen doors are ajarE
And the Lion awakes and the doomF
-
He is not of a chosen raceG
His strength is the strength of the skiesH
In whose glory all nations have placeG
In whose downfall Liberty diesH
He is mighty but he is justI
He shall live to the end of yearsJ
He shall bring the proud to the dustI
He shall raise the weak to the spheresJ
-
It is night on the world's great martK
But the brooding hush is awakeL
With the march of a steady heartK
That calls like the drum of DrakeL
Come And a muttering deepM
As the pulse of the distant gunsN
Or the thunder before the leapM
Thro' the rolling thoroughfare runsN
-
And the wounded men go byO
Like thoughts in the Lion's brainP
And the clouds lift on highO
Like the slow waves of his maneP
And the narrowing lids concealQ
The furnaces of his eyesH
Their gold is gone out They revealQ
Only two search lights of steelQ
Steadily sweeping the skiesH
-
And we hoped he had peace in his lairR
Where the bones of old tyrannies layS
And the skulls that his cubs have stripped bareR
The old skulls they still toss in their playS
But the tyrants are risen againT
And the last light dies from their pathU
For the midnight of his maneP
Lifts to the stars with his wrathU
-
From the East to the West he is crouchingV
He snuffs at the North East windW
His breast upon Britain is couchingV
His haunches quiver on IndW
It is night black night where he liesH
But a kingdom and a fleetW
Shall burn in his terrible eyesH
When he leaps and the darkness diesH
With the War gods under his feetW
-
Till the day when a little childW
Shall lay but a hand on his maneP
And his eyes grow golden and mildW
And he stands in the heavens againT
Till the day of the seventh sealQ
Which the Lion alone shall rendW
When the stars from their courses reelQ
His Freedom shall not endW
